Jeep Wrangler ground clearance over the years

Wranglers didn’t always have this much ground clearance. If you drive an older Jeep Wrangler, it’s likely that you ride a little lower, as the clearance height has crept upwards within the last couple of generations.
Here’s how the Wrangler’s ground clearance has evolved over the years:
  • 1st generation (1987–1996): 8.5 inches
  • 2nd generation (1997–2006): 8.5 inches
  • 3rd generation (2007–2017): 8-10 inches
  • 4th generation (2018–present): 9.7-10.8 inches
Keep in mind that clearance numbers depend on the model’s trim level and year. Most of the lower-level trims starting with Sport have just 9.7 inches. Once you go up to the Sahara and Rubicon trims—both names aptly hinting at pushing the limits—the clearance height kicks over into the 10-inch range

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Ground clearance is a metric for the minimum distance between the lowest point of a vehicle’s body (or chassis) and the ground. While it may not sound very fancy, it’s actually a really important dimension you should pay attention to—especially if you’re taking your Wrangler off-roading and plan to carry a heavy passenger or cargo load.
While a higher ground clearance may not make much of a difference on paved, smooth roads, rough and bumpy terrain can damage your vehicle’s undercarriage. For driving on tough terrain, it’s best to aim for a vehicle with higher ground clearance—most experts recommend a minimum of 8.5 inches for off-roading. If you have a first or second-generation Wrangler, then it may be best to skip the cross-country excursion.

Is the Jeep Wrangler a good off-road vehicle?

The Jeep Wrangler makes for one of the best off-road vehicles and is a sort of 4x4ing icon—and not just because it’s got great ground clearance.
All wranglers have come with standard four-wheel-drive since 2011. The Wrangler also boasts fantastic suspension and axle articulation, helping to keep all four wheels on the ground. You also don’t have to worry about going through wet conditions thanks to the high air intake placement, sealed electrical connections, and moisture-resistant body openings
Not only is the Jeep Wrangler well-designed to handle rugged conditions, but it also happens to be an extremely powerful vehicle with a standard 285-horsepower 3.6-liter V6. If that’s not enough kicks for you, you can add on the Xtreme Recon package, featuring 35-inch tires and a 1.5-inch suspension lift with uniquely tuned shocks—but it’s only available on the Rubicon and Willys trims.
There’s no easy way to say this, but SUVs are gas guzzlers. The 2022 Wrangler’s EPA-estimated fuel economy cranks out up to 22 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway—putting it above rivals like the
Chevrolet Colorado ZR2
and the
