Jeep’s ParkSense Front & Rear Park Assist gives drivers visual and audible alerts to help park the vehicle in perpendicular parking spots and is optional on all new Jeeps. The more advanced ParkSense Active Park Assist is a semi-autonomous park assist system that can help you with both perpendicular and parallel parking situations.
Jeep has come a long way from the days of the rugged-but-spare off-roaders that gained fame traversing Second World War battlefields. Modern Jeeps are still rugged but offer a slew of creature comforts and loads of technology, including software that will help you maneuver your Jeep into a tight parking space.
So, your Jeep might have ParkSense Park Assist or ParkSense Active Park Assist, but do you know how it works? Keep reading to learn all about how these nifty systems can make parking your Jeep a snap!

How to activate Jeep ParkSense Front & Rear Park Assist

To activate the ParkSense Park Assist, hit the ParkSense switch located in the switch panel above the UConnect display. A light should display on your instrument cluster indicating the system is engaged.
Jeep’s ParkSense Front & Rear Park Assist uses a series of visual and audible alerts to help you park your Jeep, without hitting any detected objects. Here’s what you can expect:
  • When either backing into, or driving forward into a parking spot, you will hear an audible tone every half second if an object is detected.
  • The audible tone will quicken until it is continuous as you get closer to the detected object.
  • The audible alert tones will be accompanied by flashing visual arc alerts on your instrument cluster.
The rear sensors can detect objects from between 12 inches and 79 inches away, while the front sensors can detect objects between 12 inches and 47 inches away. If the system detects a possible collision, it will auto brake to stop the maneuver when in reverse.
While Jeep’s ParkSense Park Assist is very handy, it is not perfect. Always be on the lookout for other objects, vehicles, children, animals, or anything else that may collide with your vehicle.

Do all Jeeps have ParkSense?

The ParkSense system is an optional feature on most new Jeep vehicles, including new versions of the following models:
Ask your dealer if the Jeep you are considering can be upgraded with ParkSense Front & Rear Park Assist.

How to activate Jeep ParkSense Active Park Assist

Some Jeeps offer the ability to upgrade to the Jeep ParkSense Active Park Assist system, This semi-autonomous system automatically steers your Jeep into your chosen parking spot—either a perpendicular or parallel spot—while the driver retains control over acceleration, braking, and gear shifting.
If you’re looking for a parking spot and want to use the ParkSense Active Park Assist system, follow these steps:
  • Enable the ParkSense Active Park Assist system by hitting the ParkSense switch above the UConnect display.
  • Lower your speed to less than 15 mph.
  • The system will automatically look for a parking spot on the passenger side of the Jeep. You can set it to search on the driver’s side by putting the turn signal into the “left” position.
  • When a spot is found, the ParkSense Active system will instruct you to move into position to park for either a parallel or perpendicular spot.
  • When in position, the Active Park Assist will instruct you to remove your hands from the steering wheel.
  • The system will then instruct you to switch into reverse, if applicable.
  • The Active Park Assist system will keep instructing you until the Jeep is safely in the selected parking spot.

To exit a parallel parking spot

The Jeep ParkSense Active Park Assist system can help you exit a parallel parking spot—but not a perpendicular one. To use the system to exit a parallel spot, follow these steps:
  • Enable the ParkSense system by hitting the switch above the UConnect system.
  • Use the turn signal to indicate which direction you want the Jeep to exit.
  • The system will then instruct you with any reverse or forward shifts to exit the space.
Whenever using either the Jeep ParkSense Front & Rear Park Assist or the Active Park Assist system, always exercise caution and be ready to take control of the Jeep at any time. Be on the lookout for objects, pedestrians, children, animals, or other vehicles that the ParkSense system may not see.

The bottom line

Jeep’s ParkSense Front & Rear Assist and the semi-autonomous Active Park Assist (if equipped) systems can be a huge help in negotiating your Jeep into tight spots. That said, these systems are not infallible, so it is vital for drivers to remain alert while using these systems to keep themselves—and others—safe.
