What is an interstate highway?

It’s all in the name! An interstate highway typically connects multiple states and large metropolitan areas throughout America.
So, what do the numbers mean? It’s pretty simple.
Generally speaking, one or two-digit numbers are assigned to each interstate highway. Odd numbers indicate north-south routes (like I-93), and even numbers reference east-west routes. The most important interstates will often end in a zero or five.

What states does I-93 run through?

Spanning just 190 miles, Interstate 93 passes through three states:
  • Massachusetts: 47 miles
  • New Hampshire
    : 131 miles
  • Vermont: 11 miles
Interestingly, I-93 transitions into the scenic, two-lane Franconia Notch Parkway for nine miles between Exit 33 and 35. This allows for minimal intrusion within Franconia Notch State Park and passes by the famous former site of the Old Man of the Mountain—a unique granite rock formation that was once the symbol of New Hampshire.
