What is an interstate highway?

An interstate highway runs through multiple states and links large metropolitan areas together all across the US.
The numbering system for interstate highways is definitely unique and follows certain rules. One or two-digit numbers usually mean the highway is an interstate. North-south routes have odd numbers, while east-west routes, like the I-84, have even numbers. Key highways end in zero or five.

What states does I-84 run through?

I-84 has two stretches of interstate that are not connected: a west coast side from Oregon to Utah, and an east coast side from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts.
The west coast leg of I-84 covers these states:
The east coast portion of I-84 goes through these states:
Although the stretch of roadway that functions as I-84 on the west coast is technically older (having been built in 1956), it was originally named I-80N. The east coast stretch was built in 1971. I-80N was renamed I-84 in 1980 after a change in highway naming conventions.
