Interstate 82 (I-82) runs 144 miles from Hermiston, OR to Ellensburg, WA and covers much of south-central Washington.
There’s no point in denying that I-82 is a short stretch of interstate, but it’s far from the shortest! I-82 twists its way through the Yakima Valley and was originally used for military transportation, as it connects south-central Washington to Oregon. Now it’s an important agricultural highway connecting the tri-cities.

What is an interstate highway?

There’s no mystery to what an interstate highway is—simply put, it’s a highway that runs through multiple states and connects major metropolitan areas. Easy, right?
The numbering system for interstate highways can be confusing for some, but it’s pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Most highways with one or two-digit numbers are interstates, and the major interstates typically end in zero or five. North-south routes are usually odd-numbered, while east-west routes are usually even-numbered.

What states does I-82 run through?

There are definitely interstates that are longer than I-82, but at least it passes through more than one state! I-82 runs from Ellensburg, WA to Hermiston, OR.
Fun Fact Did you know that I-82 is one of the oldest interstates in the country? Construction on it was completed in 1957.
