The name says it all—an interstate highway is a roadway that passes through several states to connect larger metro areas across the country. 
Interstate highways follow a specific numbering system, as well, that typically works with just one or two digits. Odd-numbered interstates indicate that the highway moves north to south while even-numbered interstates indicate a west-to-east path—like Interstate 30. Generally, interstates that end in a zero or five suggest a lengthier, major route, but I-30 is an exception to this norm.

What states does I-30 run through?

Interstate 30 passes through the northeast corner of Texas and the southwest corner of Arkansas. Here’s an idea of how the interstate is distributed between the two states:
At one point, there were plans to extend I-30 northeast through north-central Arkansas and into
Missouri
. However, in 2016 it was implied that US 67 freeway in Arkansas—originally slotted to be resigned as I-30’s extension—is instead going to be resigned as Interstate 57.
