How to replace a lost driver’s license in Maryland

Maybe you left your wallet at the pub across town or had your backpack stolen during the big game. Whatever the case, it’s important to order a duplicate license as soon as possible.
Not only will swift action come with extra peace of mind, but it can also protect you from the legal consequences of
driving without a license
.

Replacing a lost Maryland license online

The most straightforward place to replace a Maryland license is online. First, create a profile through the
MVA online portal,
which is used to schedule appointments and offers various other services.
Once you have an account, select access professional license. Here, you’ll need to enter the following information:
  • Driver’s license number
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • MVA pin (based on your MVA account)
  • Address information
If done correctly, the portal will request a $20 duplication fee. You can expect your new license by mail within three weeks.

Replacing a lost Maryland license in person

Need your license fast? Visiting the MVA will cut back on approval time. For some, replacing a license online might not be the most convenient option—and that’s okay!
To replace a Maryland driver's license in person, visit your local MVA office or make an appointment. You can either follow the online instructions to get a replacement at a
digital kiosk
or directly speak to an MVA agent.
Make sure to bring the following:
  • Social Security documents (W-2, Social Security card, or 1099)
  • Proof of Identity (passport or birth certificate)
  • Proof of address (renters agreement or utility bill)
After you’ve provided the information and filled out the correct paperwork, you’ll be asked to pay a $20 fee. You can expect an official copy of your license by mail between two to three weeks.
The MVA asks that you send any questions directly to their
customer support department
. You can also call 410-768-7000

What if you lose your Maryland license out of state?

Out-of-state residents can receive a replacement license. Still, this will be a lengthy process that requires a bit of back and forth between the MVA customer support department.
First, contact the MVA Absent From State Unit to explain your situation. Give your current location and explain how you lost the license. You can reach the unit via:
  • Phone (410-768-700)
  • Fax (410-424-3050)
  • Email (mvacs@dot.state.md.us)
Once your information is received, you’ll be sent an application packet for a duplicate license. Mail the complicated application and a $20 duplication fee to the return address provided. An AFS Unit agent will review your information and send you a new license within two to three weeks.
If you don’t receive a license in two to three weeks, contact an agent.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
