Can you remove the second row seats from a 2013 Ford Escape?

Yes, you can! The rear seats in the 2013 Ford Escape are totally removable—but they aren’t designed to be removed regularly like minivan seats. Removing the second row seats in a 2013 Ford Escape will require a little bit of handiwork on your part, but you won’t need fancy tools—just a Torx wrench or a screwdriver.
There are, however, some safety risks involved with removing the second row seats from a 2013 Ford Escape. Look over our safety tips before removing the rear seats from your Escape:
  • Cover your floor with a tarp or blankets. Removing the rear seat of your Escape will leave exposed bolts or brackets on the floor. Covering them with a blanket or tarp can keep you or your items from getting snagged. You can also use a rug or even a flattened cardboard box!
  • Check your airbags. We hope you aren’t driving anyone around in the trunk of your car without a seat, but this is still worth checking if you have a pet or delicate cargo (like furniture) in the back of your car. Side airbags can deploy in even a small accident and injure your pet or damage your cargo.
  • Secure the bolts! There’s nothing worse than going to return the rear seats to your Ford Escape—only to realize you lost the bolts. Keep the bolts in a safe spot where you won’t lose them. The glove compartment of your car isn’t a bad spot.
Now, you’re ready to go ahead and remove the second row seats from your Escape! Remember, if you’re looking for some extra cargo space, folding down the rear seats might be all you need (we’ll look into this later). But for now, let’s take a look at how to fully remove the second row seats from your 2013 Escape.

How to remove the second row seats from a 2013 Ford Escape

The first step is to figure out whether your Ford Escape’s rear seats are attached with a bolt system, clip system, or folding system with the bolts only at the front. The way your rear seats are attached will determine the process for removing them. Here are the steps for removing the rear seats on any 2013 Ford Escape.

Bolt system (4 bolts)

Tools needed: Torx wrench
  1. Locate the four bolts attaching the rear seat to your car.
  2. Access the back bolts through the trunk of your Ford Escape and unscrew the nuts using a Torx wrench
  3. Unscrew the two nuts on the front bolts located under the seat of the passenger footwell.
  4. Free the seat from its fasteners and remove.

Clip system

Tools needed: Screwdriver
  1. Locate the clips under the rear seat of your escape by lifting the seat of the bench.
  2. Press the plastic part of the clip with a screwdriver and pull the metal part.
  3. Remove the rear seat

Folding system

Tools needed: Torx wrench
  1. Tilt the rear seat to the forward position.
  2. Locate the Torx nuts fastening the seat to the chassis.
  3. Unscrew the nuts with a Torx wrench.
  4. Remove the rear seat

How do you put the back seats down in a 2013 Ford Escape?

You might find that fully removing the back seats from your 2013 Ford Escape is more work than you need to do if folding down the back seats will free up enough room.
Before you fold down the seats in your 2013 Ford Escape, you’ll need to determine whether your model has a back seat with a string/strap, knob, or pull button. Let’s take a look at all three methods.
  • String/strap: You will find the strap between the rear seats by the seat belt buckles at the base of the backrest or fully on the back of the seat. Pull the strap while pressing down the back of the seat. Once down, the seat will lock in place. Just pull the strap again to release it.
  • Knob: Find the knob or button on the side of the rear seat by the headrests of your bench. Pull or press the knob to release the back of the seat down into its folded position. The seat will lock in its folded position. Pull the knob again to release it back up.
  • Pull button: You can find the buttons or levers in between the rear seats by the seat belt buckle. Pull the button while pressing on the backrest to fold the seat down. Pull the button again to release the seat.
