How to add a motorcycle endorsement to your Louisiana driver’s license

To get a motorcycle endorsement on your Louisiana’s driver license, you will need to submit an application at your nearest Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) location.
All applicants are required to take a vision exam. Some applicants are also required to take a written knowledge test and a road skills test, but you may be exempt from one or both of these tests if you have completed the Louisiana Motorcycle Safety, Awareness, and Operator Training Program, authorized by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety.
If you completed this motorcycle safety course prior to October 28, 2011, you will need to take the written knowledge test, but you will be exempt from the road skills test. If you completed the course after October 28, 2011, you will be exempt from both the written knowledge test and the road skills test.
If you are required to take the knowledge test and/or the road skills test, you will need to earn an 80% in order to qualify for a motorcycle endorsement.
For the road skills test, you will need to bring your own motorcycle with a valid license plate, insurance, and an up-to-date inspection sticker. You are required to wear a motorcycle helmet during the test.
Not every OMV office offers road skill tests, so be sure to check beforehand.
When you apply for a motorcycle endorsement at the Louisiana OMV, you’ll need to bring the following with you:
  • A valid Louisiana learner’s permit or driver’s license
  • Motorcycle safety course completion certificate (if applicable)
  • An $18 application fee
  • Proof of residency
