How to change your address on a Maine driver’s license

Going to the BMV is ranked on most people’s lists of things they’d like to do somewhere between getting a papercut and stubbing your toe. Luckily, in today’s world of virtual-all-the-things, changing your address with the Maine BMV is easier than ever—especially if you’re moving within the state.

If you’re moving within Maine

Whether you’re moving down the street or from
Portland
up to Presque Isle, you’ll need to let the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) know your new address. There are three ways to do this:
  • Mail a completed change of address form to State of Maine, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, 2 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04330-0029  (forms can be obtained from your local municipal office or a Maine BMV office).
  • Complete a change of address form in person at
    your local BMV
In order to update your address, you will need:
  • Proof of Maine residency
  • Proof of your new address
  • Your existing Maine driver’s license
  • $30 fee
If you encounter an error message or have trouble using the online service, most issues can be resolved by calling the Maine BMV at 207-624-9000.

If you’re moving to Maine from another state

Out-of-state moves require a bit more work on your part—both for the move and for the change of address. Residents moving to Maine from another state must appear in person at
any Maine BMV location
to apply for a Maine license.
Before you head to the BMV, you’ll need to gather a few things:
Once you have your documents assembled, go to the
nearest BMV office
to apply for your license. In addition to completing a
vision screening
, you’ll also be required to pay both a $35 application fee and a $30 fee for the license itself.
Once you have your driver’s license up to date, be sure to update your motor vehicle registration within 30 days of establishing your Maine residency as well.

Other steps for a Maine change of address

Whenever you move, you should also notify the United States Postal Service (USPS) of your change of address, by filling out their
quick online form
. Not only will this ensure you don’t miss any mail or packages but it also gives you a chance to update your voter registration and take advantage of coupons that can come in handy as you settle into your new digs.

How to notify your insurance company of your Maine change of address

Finally, be sure you update your insurance provider with your new address as soon as possible. Often, doing this is as simple as calling your agent, but many insurance companies further simplify the process with mobile apps and online portals

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Getting pulled over after a move only to find out that you don’t currently have adequate insurance is the last thing you want to have happen to you. Like most states,
Maine's car insurance laws
requires drivers to carry minimum amounts of liability insurance, and if your policy lapses because you haven’t updated your information, you could be setting yourself up for fines, or even a license suspension.
Most insurance companies use your current zip code to help determine your premiums, so if you move without informing your provider of your new zip code, your provider could suspect you of fraud. Don’t let a simple mistake cause your rates to skyrocket, or worse, your policy to be canceled. Update your address with your insurance provider as soon as possible when you move.
