Before we talk about the winners, let’s talk about what makes a fuel-efficient car: a high mpg.
Mpg shows how far a car can travel on a single gallon of gas based on a combined average of its fuel mileage in the city and on the highway. The Environmental Protection Agency reviews (and tests, if necessary) the claimed mpg of each car model sold in the US. The resulting EPA rating represents a reliable measurement of a car’s fuel economy.
Without further ado, here are the categories, the winners, and their combined/city/highway EPA ratings:
- Most fuel-efficient hybrid: 2022 Honda Insight Hybrid (52/55/49 mpg)
- Most fuel-efficient car: 2022 Honda Civic (36/33/42 mpg)

The Insight Hybrid continues the
Civic Hybrid
's legacy as a lightweight and affordable commuter. It's reliable but compact, unlike the full-size Accord Hybrid Sedan. With more entertainment features, more driver assistance technologies, and a better interior, the Accord was Car and Driver's #1 sedan of 2022
.The compact crossover CR-V Hybrid isn't too shabby either, offering more space and cargo at the cost of fuel economy.
Hybrids are great, but it's too bad the
Honda Clarity
plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) was discontinued in 2021. Its battery needed 2.5 hours (at a Level 2 charger) or 12 hours (using a household current) to recharge. In return, it offered 48 miles of all-electric driving, 42 mpg combined, and 110 MPGe (an mpg-equivalent rating reserved for EVs). The most fuel-efficient Honda cars
At least for the moment, conventional gasoline cars are here to stay. They’re affordable and gas stations still dominate the nation's infrastructure. Nevertheless, there’s no reason not to shop for a fuel-efficient model like the:
Over 40 years, the Honda Civic has perfected the formula for a compact sedan. The 11th generation isn’t just easy on the gas, but easy on the eyes, too.
If you need more space, check out the full-size Accord. Then there's the Odyssey minivan. It won't get as much mpg, but if you're making a long trip (and have lots of passengers or cargo), you’ll get there in comfort.
As good as these ratings are, the
2022 Mitsubishi Mirage
($15,975; 39 mpg) has them beat. Unfortunately, despite its affordability and efficiency, its driving is rough. You'd be better off spending a little extra on the 2022 Hyundai Elantra

Although SUVs are roomy and rugged, they get terrible gas mileage. Thankfully, automakers have risen to the challenge of making America’s favorite car into less of a gas guzzler. Honda's top performers include:
