Before we talk about the winners, let’s talk about what makes a fuel-efficient car: a high mpg.
Mpg shows how far a car can travel on a single gallon of gas based on a combined average of its fuel mileage in the city and on the highway. The Environmental Protection Agency reviews (and tests, if necessary) the claimed mpg of each car model sold in the US. The resulting EPA rating represents a reliable measurement of a car’s fuel economy.
Without further ado, here are the categories, the winners, and their combined/city/highway EPA ratings:

Hybrids are great, but it's too bad the
Honda Clarity
plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) was discontinued in 2021. Its battery needed 2.5 hours (at a Level 2 charger) or 12 hours (using a household current) to recharge. In return, it offered 48 miles of all-electric driving, 42 mpg combined, and 110 MPGe (an mpg-equivalent rating reserved for EVs). If you need more space, check out the full-size Accord. Then there's the Odyssey minivan. It won't get as much mpg, but if you're making a long trip (and have lots of passengers or cargo), you’ll get there in comfort.
As good as these ratings are, the
2022 Mitsubishi Mirage
($15,975; 39 mpg) has them beat. Unfortunately, despite its affordability and efficiency, its driving is rough. You'd be better off spending a little extra on the 2022 Hyundai Elantra
