background
GMC Park Assist is a typically standard feature that helps you navigate into and out of a parking spot, but recent microchip shortages mean not all new GMC vehicles will have this feature. GM's Enhanced Park Assist, or Auto Park Assist, is an optional feature on select GMC models that uses sonar-based technology to automatically park your vehicle for you.
General Motors may have a stodgy image compared to global competitors, but they still offer most of the bells and whistles you’ll find in foreign competition. This includes your vehicle’s ability to help you as you park your vehicle or even park your vehicle for you.
Not sure how to activate your GM’s Park Assist or Enhanced Park Assist if you have it? We’ve got you covered with this how-to guide!

How to activate GMC Park Assist

Using multiple ultrasonic sensors on both the front and rear bumpers, GM’s Park Assist can guide you in parking your vehicle while helping you avoid other detected vehicles and objects. The driver is responsible for steering, braking, accelerating, and changing gears while Park Assist is in use, and this feature is not available on all GMC models.
To turn Park Assist on, tap the Park Assist button in the customizing menu or your Settings menu, and use the same button to turn it off. Some GM vehicles allow you to turn this system on via a button on your GMC’s infotainment system.
Here are the features and advantages when using GMC Park Assist:
  • When backing into a parking spot, your GM vehicle’s Rear Park Assist will make a low-pitched beep when an object is detected within six feet, and the beeps will increase as you steer the vehicle closer to the object
  • When your rear bumper gets within two feet of the object, you will hear five repeating low-pitched beeps
  • When fronting into a parking spot, GM’s Front Park Assist will make the same low-pitched beep when an object is within four feet of the vehicle, with the beeps increasing in frequency the closer you get to the object
  • When an object is within one foot of either the front or rear bumper, you will hear a continuous low-pitched tone
Some GMC vehicles are equipped with infotainment screen alerts, which will show triangles going from yellow to amber to red on the rear camera display to indicate proximity to an object. Some GMC vehicles may display guidelines showing the path of the vehicle, while still giving audible alerts to any objects detected in your path.

Which GMCs have Park Assist?

At the moment, only some GMCs have Park Assist. Normally, this would be a standard feature on all new GMC vehicles, the global microchip shortage and continuing supply chain issues have caused GM to remove this feature from certain models for the time being.
Park Assist should eventually be standard on the following new GM vehicles:

How to activate GMC Enhanced Park Assist

Some GMC buyers will have the option to upgrade their Park Assist system to the Enhanced Park Assist (Auto Park) system. This uses sonar-based technology along the vehicle’s front, rear, and sides to detect parking spots and automatically park the vehicle for you.
While GMC’s Enhanced Park Assist parks the vehicle automatically, this doesn’t mean the driver can take a rest. The driver must remain alert to any objects, pedestrians, children, animals, or other hazards that the system may not see
Here’s how the GMC’s Enhanced Park Assist works:
  • On the homepage of your infotainment screen, press the Park icon while driving no more than 18 miles per hour
  • The Enhanced Park Assist system will search for parking spots up to five feet away
  • Once a spot is detected, the vehicle will move at or near idle speed and will steer, brake, accelerate, and shift gears as necessary to maneuver the vehicle into the spot
  • Be ready to take control of the vehicle at any time in case of emergency
  • To switch between parallel and perpendicular parking modes, touch and hold the park icon as you search for a parking spot

The bottom line

While GMC Park Assist is a handy feature, it is not foolproof. You must remain alert to any objects, pedestrians, children, animals, or other vehicles that Park Assist or Enhanced Park Assist may or may not see. Do a visual check of the area before using the features, and regularly clean the ultrasonic sensors on both front and rear bumpers to ensure they work properly.
If you’re experiencing any problems with your Park Assist features, consult your owner’s manual.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
