2022 GMC electric vehicle guide

In a totally unexpected but undeniable cool plot twist, the Hummer, which ceased production in 2010, is back in 2022 as an electric vehicle (EV). If you want one, you need to reserve it through GMC, and so far the only available Hummer EV is the pickup’s highest trim level, Edition 1. Lower trim levels and SUV models will come out later in 2022 and 2023.
So far, the Hummer EV has been released to rave reviews as it packs a surprising amount of power, like 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 ft-lb of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 in three seconds and boasts an impressive range of 329 miles per charge. Its MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent) breaks down to 47 combined, 51 in the city, and 43 on the highway
Don’t be confused by the MPGe acronym—the new Hummer is all-electric and uses no liquid fuel. But MPGe gives buyers a familiar reference tool to evaluate how efficient a vehicle is.
The starting price for the 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 truck is $110,295. Other trims in the pickup line will be out in late 2022.
Slated for 2024 is the third in GMC’s electric lineup—the all-electric GMC Sierra.

Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric car: what’s the difference?

There’s a split in today’s auto industry based on a difference of opinion regarding the pursuit of hybrid technology. Some companies, like Toyota, continue to develop hybrid options while also pursuing all-electric vehicle technology. Others, like General Motors and Volkswagen, have scrapped hybrids for the time being as they look to develop an all-electric fleet.
Here’s how to understand the differences between these types of vehicles:
  • Hybrid vehicles run on gasoline but they are equipped with special motors which help to propel and power the vehicle. Passive hybrids have batteries that are charged by the use of the vehicle’s traditional gas-powered engine.
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles, also referred to as PHEVs, have batteries that can be charged by an external source but rely on gasoline engines as a back-up source of power when the PHEV battery isn’t charged.
  • Electric Vehicles, or EVs, are entirely battery-powered and need to maintain a charge to work.

The best GMC hybrid cars

While GMC has turned its attention away from hybrid manufacturing in favor of EVs, you can still find its used lineup of hybrid Sierras and Yukons for sale. Here’s a breakdown of those models.

GMC Sierra 1500 Hybrid

From 2009 to 2013, GMC offered the Sierra 1500 hybrid, making it the only full-size hybrid pickup truck available on the market. The Sierra 1500 hybrid featured a 6-liter V8 engine that got 21 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway
In 2011, the truck was updated with a 2-mode hybrid drivetrain, achieving more efficiency while still managing a 6,100-pound tow rating.

GMC Yukon Hybrid

From 2009 to 2014, GMC marketed the full-size SUV
Yukon
with a hybrid model, but the line petered out without much success. The Yukon managed 359 horsepower and a 6,200-pound tow rating, but it was priced way higher than the traditional gas-fueled Yukon, and only offered an extra six miles per gallon.
Its efficiency paled compared to other hybrids on the market, as buyers couldn’t justify spending so much more for so little difference.

Are GMC hybrids worth it?

Thinking about buying a used GMC hybrid? Here’s what you need to know.

Performance

Both the GMC Yukon and Sierra 1500 hybrids maintain the performance expectations of their non-hybrid sister models. However, neither was outstanding when it came to efficiency compared to other hybrids.
It’s true that they pulled off an impressive gas mileage when compared to traditional gas-powered full-size pickups and SUVs. However, when buyers were confronted with paying $5,000 to $10,000 more for a hybrid vehicle that only got a few more miles per gallon than a regular vehicle, the market for full-size GMC hybrids collapsed.

Reliability

According to RepairPal, the GMC full-size hybrid lineup gets a lower-than-average rating for reliability. The Yukon Hybrid has earned 3 of 5 stars, and the Sierra 1500 gets 3.5.
The Yukon has had recurring cosmetic issues with dash cracking or handles falling off, as well as the anti-theft system occasionally preventing the vehicle from starting. Some Sierra 1500 hybrids have had issues with the 4WD transfer case sensor malfunctioning, the fuel level sensor failing, and the steering developing a clunky noise.

How much do they cost today?

According to Kelly Blue Book, a 2013 GMC Yukon hybrid could cost anywhere from $17,509 to $19,852. The Denali trim could go as high as $21,000.
A 2013 Sierra 1500 crew cab hybrid could cost between $17,569 and $22,200.
Keep in mind that whatever you pay for a used hybrid vehicle will be offset by savings on gas costs. Further, some insurance companies offer discount programs for drivers who buy alternative energy vehicles. Finally, you may also be eligible for a
hybrid or electric car tax credit

Not anymore. GMC offered a full-size SUV, the Yukon, as a hybrid from 2009 to 2014, and the Sierra 1500 pickup from 2008 to 2013. However, the company announced that its development would shift to all-electric vehicles and they would no longer produce any hybrids.
GMC is already taking order reservations for its 2022 Hummer EV Edition 1 pickup. The Hummer SUV EV will come out in 2023, and the new hybrid Sierra is slated for 2024. These will be entirely electric-powered vehicles, and GMC has indicated a goal for its whole fleet to be electric by 2035.
