What are the requirements for a driver’s license in Georgia?
If you are over 18 years of age, you can start the process to get your license in Georgia.
To get your driver’s license in Georgia, you must do the following:
- Go to aDDS Customer Service Centre
- Prove that you have an instruction permit or have practiced driving under supervision for a minimum of 40 hours (including six nighttime hours)
- Complete every part of the application form
- Pass a vision test
- Gather all necessary documentation to verify:
- Your identity, including your full nameYour Social Security number (or proof of ineligibility for a Social Security number)Your US citizenshipYour home addressYour date of birth
What are the requirements for young drivers?
If you are under 18, you need to get your Class CP
instructional permit
. Then, you can apply for your Class D provisional (teen) or Class C full (adult) driver’s license.Young drivers must do the following:
- Visit a DDS Customer Service Center to apply
- Fill out every part of the application form
- Submit the documentation to verify:
- You attend or have graduated from a secondary schoolYour date of birthYour identityYour residential address in GeorgiaYour Social Security number or proof of ineligibility for a Social Security numberYour US citizenship (or your legal presence in the US if you are not a US citizen)
All young drivers must also:
- Pass a vision test and a knowledge test
- Pay the $10 fee
- Have a photo taken
What are the requirements for out-of-state drivers?
If you move to the state of Georgia, you will have to go to your local DDS Customer Service Center to start the process of getting your new Georgia driver’s license.
If your current out-of-state license is still valid, here is what you need to do:
- Hand over your current license
- Pass the vision test
- Provide a certified copy of your driving record from the state where your driver’s license was issued.
If you do not have your driver’s license on hand, you will need to do everything mentioned above, in addition to passing another vision test.
How to get a driver’s license in Georgia
Once you’re eligible for your Class C Full (Adult) Driver’s license, you will have to complete these tests:
Vision test
Georgia stipulates that if your sight is below 20/60 even with corrective lenses, and your field of vision is less than 140 degrees, you will be required to have a DS-274 completed by an approved eye doctor.
Knowledge exam
At a DDS Customer Service Center, you will have to take a knowledge test where you will have to prove your understanding of basic driving information by answering 40 questions.
Road test
You will also have to get behind the wheel and prove that you can drive a car. Most road tests are designed to gauge your ability to do basic driving functions and how you react to common situations, including:
- Standard vehicle inspection and understanding the controls
- Responding to road signs, traffic signals, and pavement markings
- Three-point turn
- Left and right turns
- Use right-of-way rules
- Follow and overtake vehicles
- Merge with traffic
- Lane changes
- Enter intersections
- Maintain a proper speed
- Parallel parking
Don’t forget that the driver must always provide the vehicle for the road test.
