How to Use Ford Active Park Assist
Ford’s Active Park Assist system helps drivers with parallel parking, but its base technology only handles steering.
Ford’s Active Park Assist has been added to select Ford vehicles since 2010 and works to guide drivers into parallel parking spots. Enhanced Active Park Assist and Active Park Assist 2.0 are upgraded systems that add help with perpendicular parking and pulling out of parking spots—and all of these are activated by pressing the Active Park Assist button on the center console.

How to activate Ford Active Park Assist
Ford’s Active Park Assist comes in three levels: Active Park Assist, Enhanced Active Park Assist, and Active Park Assist 2.0. Each of them helps handle parallel parking at least and uses sensors and cameras to search for viable parking spaces, provide guidance on shifting, accelerating, and decelerating, and handle all steering when pulling into the parking space.
That’s where Active Park Assist stops. As you move up to Enhanced Active Park Assist, you’ll also have access to Park Out assistance, which helps guide you out of parallel parking spaces, and perpendicular parking assistance, which guides you through reverse parking.
Active Park Assist 2.0 became available in 2020 and is the most advanced of Ford’s park assist options. Here, you’ll have true automatic parking in which you’ll just need to shift the car into neutral and allow Active Park Assist 2.0 to handle everything else—steering, accelerating, decelerating, and shifting. Here’s how to activate it:
- Press the Active Park Assist 2.0 button found on the center console and depicting the letter P next to an image of a steering wheel; this starts the system and displays the Active Park Assist notification menu on your Ford’s infotainment display
- Keep driving your vehicle, maintaining about three feet from the parked vehicles around you; Active Park Assist 2.0 will begin scanning the area for an available parking spot and alert you with a sound and a displayed message once one has been located
- Press and hold the brake pedal, remove your hands from the steering wheel, and shift into neutral to prep for the system assistance
- Once you’re ready to allow Active Park Assist 2.0 to park for you, press and hold the Active Park Assist button and release the brake pedal
- The system will begin parking your vehicle, including all needed steering, shifting, accelerating, and braking; pause or stop the system at any time by pressing the brake pedal, shifting out of neutral, turning the steering wheel, or opening the driver door
If you used Active Park Assist to get into a parallel parking space, you can also use it to pull out of that space. You’ll simply need to press the Active Park Assist button again and follow the prompts on the screen to select the Park Out option.
While Ford’s Active Park Assist, Enhanced Active Park Assist, and Active Park Assist 2.0 can be great tools to use for tricky parking situations, remember that they are not perfect. While unlikely, the sensors may be skewed by environmental interference, including heavy rain and other conditions. You are always responsible for controlling your vehicle, so be sure to stay alert when using this feature.
Do all Fords have Active Park Assist?
No, not all Fords have Active Park Assist. It is made available as an add-on feature for many Ford models, and Enhanced Active Park Assist and Active Park Assist 2.0 are also optional features for many new Ford vehicles.
Active Park Assist 2.0, however, is the newest and most sophisticated park assist feature released by the Blue Oval and does come standard on some models.
