Although the Ford Fusion was manufactured from 2006 through 2020, it was only available with an optional V6 on its highest trim option, the Ford Fusion SEL, through the 2012 model year.
Many people will recall the first generation of
Ford’s
popular mid-size sedan thanks to its memorable “Life in Drive” advertising campaign. The base Ford Fusion was fitted with a 160-horsepower, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine, but an optional 220-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 was available on higher trims for customers that wanted a boost in both performance and speed.
Thinking about buying a used Ford? We're here with all the specs and stats on the Ford Fusion SEL V6.

Ford Fusion SEL V6

Engine: 3.0-liter V6
Horsepower: 220 hp at 6,250 rpm or 240 hp at 6,550 rpm
Torque: 205 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm or 223 lb-ft at 4,300 rpm
0 to 60: 6.9 seconds or 6.2 seconds
The first Fusion was built using the CD3 platform originally designed by
Mazda
and was the first Ford vehicle to feature the recognizable three-bar grille design that Ford still uses today. It was wildly popular with US buyers and even outsold competitors like
Toyota Camry
and
Honda Accord
in its first few years.
The Ford Fusion came in three trim options:
S
,
SE
, and SEL. But the highest trim, the Ford Fusion SEL, was the only one that could be fitted with the optional 220-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 engine. It featured a CD player, automatic climate control, cruise control, keyless entry, and larger wheels. Optional add-ons included heated seats, auto-dimming mirrors, and automatic headlights.
In 2010 the Ford Fusion was given a major facelift, giving both the interior and the exterior of the car an updated look and adding manual-shift mode for the automatic transmission, HD radio, and rain-sensing windshield wipers
The base Fusions were fitted with a more powerful inline engine and a 240-horsepower, 3.0-liter V6 for the SEL made it more powerful and faster than its predecessors.

How’s the fuel economy?

As is often the case with powerful V6 engines, the Ford Fusion SEL isn’t particularly eco-friendly. The SEL V6 manufactured between 2006 and 2009 gets 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. SELs produced in 2010, 2011, and 2012 get 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway if fitted with the V6 engine.

How fast is the Ford Fusion SEL V6?

The Ford Fusion SEL V6 was pretty fast for its time, but the midsize sedan certainly didn’t break any speed records. It could go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds or 6.2 seconds, depending on its model year. Here’s how the Ford Fusion SEL compares to some competitors in terms of speed:

Which Ford Fusion SEL V6 is the best?

There isn't much difference between the two Ford Fusion SEL V6 engines, but the V6 that was available for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 models was slightly faster and more powerful.
The biggest difference between the early and later Ford Fusion SEL V6 models is in their body style and features. Because the Ford Fusion was redesigned in 2010, later models have a more stylish exterior and better amenities.
