For the month of October, drivers in Florida are enjoying a 25-cent reduction in the state’s gas tax, which brings the tax down to $0.08125 per gallon total. This drop is only temporary, though—after Oct. 31, 2022, the fuel excise tax will return to its earlier value of $0.33425 per gallon.
The cost of gas is a constant concern for many Americans, especially in 2022. The unstable economy in the wake of the pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine have led to skyrocketing gas prices across the States.
Part of the cost of filling up your tank is your state’s gas tax. So what does that look like in Florida?
In this article, we’ll take a look at Florida’s gas tax, gas tax relief package, and what fuel costs are looking like in the state right now. Read on to learn more about the Florida gas tax—and how to save on your

How much is the Florida gas tax?

The Florida gas tax in 2022 is $0.33425 per gallon—but for the month of October, Floridians are seeing a 25.3-cent drop, making the gas tax $0.08125 through Oct. 31, 2022.
These are the minimum gas rates for Florida, though. Florida counties can add option taxes that raise the total gas tax imposed. In Florida, you might pay up to 39 cents/gallon in gas taxes.
Here is the total gas tax imposed in various Florida counties:
  • Lafayette: $0.33425/gallon
  • Hendry: $0.33425/gallon
  • Bradford: $0.39425/gallon
  • Escambia: $0.38425/gallon

Is gas tax relief on the way in Florida?

Gas tax relief is here for drivers in Florida! Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a tax relief package into law that provides gas tax relief for Floridians in the month of October.
House Bill 7071
, which includes a gas tax holiday in October, is estimated to save Floridians $200 million by lowering the gas tax by $0.253/gallon.
That relief doesn’t come without cons, though. Some Democrats are criticizing the relief package as a political stunt for Gov. DeSantis to secure his place in office. While the relief will keep each Florida driver with a bit of extra money, it’s also a collective $200 million that won’t be collected to fund roads and infrastructure projects.
To put that into perspective, if you fill up a 12-gallon tank of gas once a week for the month of October, the gas tax relief package will save you just over $12. It’s money, sure, but it’s not an enormous amount.

How high are gas prices in Florida?

According to
AAA
, the average price for gas in Florida as of October 2022 is $3.221/gallon. That’s almost twenty cents higher than the average one year ago of $3.049/gallon.
But if you know anything about gas prices, you know that they can change drastically each day. The war in Ukraine led to a huge spike in gas prices across the country. And even more recently, the catastrophic and historic Hurricane Ian swept across Florida—and it’s unclear how that hurricane and its consequences will impact gas costs in the state.
