Electric Car Charging Stations in West Virginia
In 2022, West Virginia announced plans to dramatically expand its electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center, there are 111 public charging stations you can access in West Virginia, but that number will soon be growing.
That’s because West Virginia, like other states, has signed on under a federal program called the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) plan, which will pump $47.5 million into West Virginia over the next five years to build up its EV charging accessibility. Right now, the plan is in Phase 1, focusing on building new charging stations along Interstates 64, 68, 70, 77, 79, and 81 through West Virginia.

Where to find electric vehicle charging stations in West Virginia
Before you set out for the nearest EV charging station, you need to know a little about the different station levels. Here are the charging port types you’ll come across in West Virginia:
- Level 1: These are the slowest chargers. They’re equivalent to a standard household outlet with 120 volts and can take over 24 hours to get a full charge. They’re great if you have some time or just need to charge up your plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
- Level 2: These offer 220 volts and are handy if you’re plugging in during work or at home. It can take four to six hours to get a full charge.
- Level 3: Also called DC Fast Chargers, these ports can charge as quickly as 20 miles per minute and are great when you’re on a trip. They’re also more expensive to use than slower chargers.
- Tesla Supercharger: The Tesla Supercharger is a 480-volt fast charger, but it’s not open to car brands outside of Tesla.
The overwhelming majority of West Virginia’s public EV charging stations—94 out of 111—are Level 2 chargers. There are a handful of DC Fast Chargers, two public Level 1 charging stations, and 12 Tesla Superchargers.

How much does it cost to charge an electric car in West Virginia?
If you can find a free charger (which is almost always going to be a Level 1 charger) and you’ve got the time to spend, then you might be able to charge up your EV battery for no cost. If you’re at a paid Level 1 charger, it could cost somewhere between $1.50 to $14.
Most other West Virginia EV charging stations—like Level 2 and DC Fast Chargers—are a little more expensive, but they charge much more quickly. Here’s some information on what you might pay to use these ports in West Virginia.
Level 2 charging stations will typically charge $0.20 to $0.30 per kWh for a total average cost of $8 to $40, depending on your battery size and type. Of course, what you pay can vary based on electric costs at the time, as well as your vehicle type and how long you charge it for.
If you use a DC Fast Charger, you may be charged by the minute or by kWh. On average, the cost is around $0.35 per kWh for a full-charge cost of $10 to $30.

incentive program, which offers up to $500 in rebates for home EV charger installation. The EV charger you buy must be an Energy Star-certified Level 2 charger installed at your residence for private home use.
