Unfortunately, Honda hasn’t made a station wagon since 2015—so, if you’re in the market for a new vehicle, you’ll have to explore some other options. You could consider another make, opt for a used Honda station wagon, or take a look at another vehicle style, such as a hatchback.

What’s the difference between a station wagon and a hatchback?

Hatchbacks and station wagons share some traits. For example, they typically both have a two-box design: one for passengers and cargo and a second for rear-door access. For this reason, both feature flexible cargo capabilities.

But there are a few major differences:

A hatchback’s roofline generally starts slanting down immediately after the doors (coupe or sedan), meaning its rear-entry door has to be raised up. On the other hand, a station wagon’s roof will extend in a flat line the entire length of the vehicle, so the rear door can be raised, lowered, or swung open.

Station wagons must have large rear windows that cover at least 50% of the cargo space—hatchbacks typically have more traditional rear windshields.

Hatchbacks have an A-pillar, B-pillar, and C-pillar, while station wagons include an additional D-pillar.

Some station wagons—especially older models—include an additional third row of seats, which often are rear-facing and can be folded down into cargo spaces. Hatchbacks don’t offer a third row of seating.

Even though Honda no longer makes station wagons, there are two used models that we highly recommend: the Accord Wagon and the Crosstour.

Honda Accord Wagon

The Honda Accord Wagon was in production in the United States from 1989 to 1997. There are just a few used models still out there, but—if you can get your hands on one—you’ll likely pay just around $3,000.

Only two trim levels were offered in the States: the LX and the EX. Both were originally fitted with a 2.0-liter 12-valve engine, with a 2.2-liter 16-valve engine replacing it in later years. The EX trim offers an additional five horsepower thanks to a slightly different exhaust manifold.

Honda Crosstour

If you’re in the market for a Honda station wagon, the

will likely be the model you encounter the most, as it was produced from 2009 to 2015.

The newest model comes standard with a 2.4-liter I-4 engine that produces 192 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. You can upgrade trim levels for a more powerful V6 engine, which includes cylinder deactivation for increased efficiency.

The 2015 Crosstour earned a 4 out of 5-star rollover safety rating from the NHTSA, with additional safety features including lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning, and LaneWatch—a system that uses a camera on the right side mirror to display what’s in your blind spot on the infotainment screen. These features earned the vehicle the highest possible safety scores in four IIHS evaluation categories.

Thanks to its desirable features, the Crosstour is one of the more expensive used station wagons you can buy. Here’s the average price you’ll pay for various models:
