How much can a Dodge Durango SXT tow?

Towing capacity: 6,200 pounds
Engines: 3.6-liter Pentastar V6
As far as SUVs are concerned, the Dodge Durango SXT is fitted with an impressive 6,200-pound towing capacity when fitted properly. This level of power is unparalleled by the Durango’s competitors—and even more impressive considering the SXT is an entry-level trim. Let’s dive into what makes this SUV so strong.
First of all, The Durango SXT’s standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine packs up to 293 horsepower. Rear-wheel and all-wheel drive are both available, but neither affects the SXT’s base towing capacity. The rear-drive axle does, however, contribute to the SXT’s optimized weight distribution to maximize its towing efficiency.

Other Dodge Durango towing capacities

While the Durango SXT is more than equipped to tow a great variety of work and leisure attachments, Dodge offers plenty of other trim configurations for higher tow capacities depending on what you need.
Upgrading to the R/T or Citadel trims gives you the option to fit your Durango with the 5.7-liter V8 engine and a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds. However, if you want to take advantage of the maximum towing capacity available for the Durango—8,700 pounds—you’ll have to opt for one of the following trim configurations:
  • R/T Trim with the Tow N Go package upgrade, 5.7-liter V8 engine, and all-wheel drive
  • SRT® 392 Trim with the 6.4-liter V8 engine and all-wheel drive
  • SRT® Hellcat Trim with the Supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine and all-wheel drive

Trailer hitches for the Dodge Durango SXT

While Dodge only offers a towing package—the Tow N Go upgrade—for the R/T trim, you can easily fit your Durango SXT with any class IV trailer hitch from your dealership or an aftermarket provider. Just make sure that it fits your SUV if you choose an aftermarket trailer hitch.

How to calculate the towing capacity you need

With a 6,200 pound threshold to play with, you can tow a wide range of trailers and campers so long as you’re careful with the extra weight of your cargo. Treat your towing capacity like poison ivy—you try to avoid it and you definitely don’t touch it.
Even if you keep a safe threshold between your heaviest load and your SXT’s towing capacity, here are some examples of what you could be able to tow:
  • Jet ski trailer (300 to 1,800 lbs)
  • Small enclosed utility trailer (1,000 to 3,200 lbs)
  • Tow dolly (600 to 4,000 lbs)
  • Pop-up camper (2,800 to 4,300 lbs)
  • Small travel trailer (1,200 to 4,500 lbs)
  • Large enclosed utility trailer, when partially filled (2,700 to 7,100)
As you can see here, your new SXT is more than equipped to tackle a small family camping trip or the occasional large item move—so long as that large item doesn’t push your large trailer’s weight to the towing capacity.

How to increase towing capacity

If you need a bit more brute strength than the Durango SXT can offer, your easiest option to increase your towing capacity is to upgrade to a higher trim with a stronger configuration.
If that’s not in your budget and you don’t need that much more strength, you can always try some aftermarket upgrades to slightly increase your towing capacity, such as:
  • adding a weight-distribution hitch to lessen the strain on your suspension by reducing sway
  • upgrading your brakes with better pads and rotors that can handle a heavier load
  • increasing the size of your radiator for more efficient engine cooling
  • switching to a stronger axle such as an RV axle
If any of these options still aren’t doing it for you, you, unfortunately, won’t find a stronger (or cheaper) SUV in this class. You may be better off buying a used SUV like a 2014
Chevrolet Suburban 2500
for a cheaper option or a pickup truck like the
Ford F-150
for a stronger option.

FAQs

When properly equipped, the Dodge Durango SXT’s towing capacity is unparalleled by any other vehicle in its class, making this a relatively fantastic car for towing.
The Dodge Durango SXT should be able to handle most hybrid/pop-up campers and small trailers. However if your trailer is close to or exceeds 6,200 pounds, you can upgrade to a higher trim level to increase your Durango’s towing capacity and tackle a heavier tow.
