Most people don’t buy a muscle car just to get from point A to point B. Not only do muscle cars come packed with engine power, but they also make a statement that’s unique to their owners. Fortunately, the Mustang comes with a slew of customization options to choose from.

2022 Ford Mustang customization options

The Ford Mustang is an iconic muscle car with performance, enhanced handling, and power at the forefront. The draw of getting a Mustang gets stronger with each trim and customization option available to buyers.
The 2022 Mustang is available in seven trim levels—from the everyday EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, and GT Premium to the performance-based Mach 1, Mach 1 Premium, and Shelby GT500. The starting price ranges from $37,725 to $77,155.
Each of the everyday trims is also available in fastback or convertible (excluding GT), giving you another option to customize the look of your two-door pony car while maintaining its everyday functionality.
The EcoBoost trims come standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder. Don’t be fooled, though, as this engine packs enough punch to put the old V8 Mustangs to shame. If you want added performance, the High Performance Package is a good way to boost the engine’s responsiveness without a premium price tag.
If you love the raw power of muscle cars, then the GT and Mach 1 models are perfect for you. Each is outfitted with a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 450 hp and 470 hp engines respectively, which is enough to tear through the racetracks effortlessly but still suited for everyday roads.
The 760-hp Shelby GT500 is too powerful to be considered for everyday use and should be excluded from consideration.
Both engine options come with a standard six-speed manual transmission, but you can also get the 10-speed automatic transmission for an even quicker drive. All Mustang trims are only available in rear-wheel drive.

There are also independent add-ons that allow you to make your Mustang truly one-of-a-kind without having to purchase entire packages. This includes options like a spoiler delete, rear-seat delete, remote start system, and blind-spot information system.

How to customize your Mustang to save money

It’s safe to say that choosing any add-ons and packages means that the overall cost of the car will increase.
If you opt for all the available packages and upgrades on a Mach 1 Premium, your final price would jump significantly from the base MSRP of $56,095 to $64,530, putting the Mustang into the price range of luxury cars.
When you load up your custom Mustang with upgrades, you’ll end up paying a lot more for your car and your car insurance. However, a few custom options could help save you money. Consider these options if you’re hoping to save more on your custom Mustang:
  • Standard equipment group package: If you want a Mustang without any frills, opt for the standard equipment group packagerather than the high equipment group package to save $2,400 (available for EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, and GT Premium).
  • Security system: You have the option to add the security package to any of the trims to enhance the protection of your car. This could qualify you for a discount on your car insurance.
  • Safety packages: The Ford Safe and Smart package adds safety features like adaptive cruise control and a voice-activated navigation system. This can earn you a discount with some insurance providers.

The best Ford Mustang mods

While the list of trims, packages, and upgrades offered by Ford is endless, adding everything you want can get expensive fast. If you still want to customize your Mustang without the high price tag, you can do your own third-party upgrades to make it uniquely yours.

Tires

Lower Mustang trims come with standard all-season tires. Amp up its performance and handling with some summer tires, which provide more traction to handle the 460 hp. You can further enhance the traction with 265/40R19 Pirelli Corsa4 tires on 19-inch aluminum wheels.

Exhaust system

The standard exhaust system that comes with the Mustang can give a raspy sound, which undermines the power the Mustang has. If you want your Mustang to sound as fast as it actually is, you can get an H-pipe exhaust, which will give you less rasp and a deeper exhaust note
You can also take it further and get a cat-back exhaust system, but it will cost substantially more.

Engine

The Mustang engine is a direct-injected engine, which means there can be a build-up of oils and other contaminants in the engine’s intake manifold. This, in turn, will lead to a loss of power, increased fuel consumption, and rough idling.
Simply adding a catch can mod will help you avoid buildup and allow your engine to run smoothly for longer.
