When to renew your driver’s license in Connecticut

Each driver’s license lists an expiration date on the front of the card. Connecticut driver’s licenses list the expiration date under your date of birth, right above the issued date. 
Connecticut drivers can renew their driver’s license as early as 180 days (six months) before the expiration date. If your email address is on file, you’ll receive a renewal reminder email 45 days before your license expires. 

How to renew your driver’s license in Connecticut

Depending on your eligibility, you can renew your Connecticut driver’s license online, by mail, or in person.

Renew your license online

You cannot renew your license online if any of the following apply to you: 
  • Your photo wasn’t taken the last time you renewed your license.
  • You’re applying for a REAL ID for the first time.
  • You aren’t a US citizen.
  • You have a commercial driver’s license.
  • You don’t have a first name or need to update your name.
  • Your license is suspended. 
  • You have an S, V, A, or F endorsement.
  • You’re in the military or were honorably discharged in the last 60 days and wish to renew without paying the fee. 
If none of these apply to you, you’re all set to

! Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Your first and last name
  • Your date of birth 
  • Your street address
  • Your driver’s license number
  • Your social security number
  • A valid credit or debit card number 
The renewal fees in Connecticut are either $72.00 for a six-year license renewal or $96.00 for an eight-year license renewal. Drivers over 65 years old can request a two-year license renewal for $24.00. An additional $25.00 fee will be added to renewals for licenses that are already expired.

Renew your license by mail

Connecticut drivers can only renew their license by mail in the following situations: 
  • You are on active duty in the US military or have been honorably discharged in the last 60 days (no fee required).
  • You have a medical condition that prevents you from going to the DMV in person. 
  • You’re temporarily out of the state or country. Your new license will be mailed to your current address.
  • You’re currently incarcerated.
You cannot renew by mail if you fit the following criteria: 
  • Your new license will be mailed to the mailing address you provide the DMV.
  • Your last renewal was processed by mail or online. 
  • You have a commercial driver's license or have public service endorsements. 
If you fit the qualifications to renew by mail, you’ll have to complete
Form B-350
, include a check for your fee payable to “DMV,” and send it to the following address:

You must send in your application at least 10 days before your license expires.

Renew your license in person

If you can’t renew online or by mail, you’ll need to
make an appointment
to go to the DMV for license renewal in person. Here’s what you’ll need: 
  • The renewal application form you received in the mail, if applicable.
  • Your current license or another
    acceptable form of identification
  • Your fee payment.
  • Official document certifying your name change, if applicable.
