SUVs have recently picked up the torch as the top choice for family cars, but sometimes a solid, sturdy minivan is still what your on-the-go clan needs. They’ve definitely got the cargo space for bag upon bag of soccer equipment, but before you go packing any tents or camping gear there’s one important spec you’ll need to check—ground clearance.
Attempting to tackle backroads in a minivan that wasn’t made for them can turn your next family adventure into family devastation. That’s why we're here to tackle everything you need to know about the Chrysler Pacifica’s ground clearance, what that means for its driving capabilities, and how to lower your

2022 Chrysler Pacifica ground clearance

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica comes standard with FWD and 5.1 inches of ground clearance across all trim models. However, if you choose to upgrade your trim choice with the optional AWD, then your Pacifica’s ground clearance will bump up to 5.4 inches.

Chrysler Pacifica ground clearance over the years

The Chrysler Pacifica minivan has been built with a standard ground clearance of 5.1 inches since it was first introduced for the 2017 model year. However, the 2021 model year introduced a slightly higher ground clearance of 5.4 inches for models with the optional AWD. Here’s how that breaks down by model year:
  • 2017 Pacifica FWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2018 Pacifica FWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2019 Pacifica FWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2020 Pacifica FWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2020 Pacifica AWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2021 Pacifica FWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2021 Pacifica AWD: 5.4 inches
  • 2022 Pacifica FWD: 5.1 inches
  • 2022 Pacifica AWD: 5.4 inches
The Pacifica name was also used from 2004 to 2008 for a crossover from Chrysler with the following ground clearances by model year:
  • 2004 Pacifica: 5.9 inches
  • 2005 Pacifica: 5.9 inches
  • 2006 Pacifica: 5.9 inches
  • 2007 Pacifica: 4.8-5.9 inches (depending on trim level)
  • 2008 Pacifica: 4.8 inches

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Ground clearance measures the distance between the lowest point of equipment on your car’s undercarriage and the ground. It essentially tells you how safe your car’s underside is from debris on the road and uneven terrain.
Vehicles with higher ground clearance are much more fit to tackle rugged backroads, bumpy surfaces, and debris-ridden trails because their equipment is higher off the ground and safer. Vehicles with lower ground clearance should pretty much stick to simple paved roads, but that doesn't mean they don’t have their benefits. Riding lower to the ground improves the vehicle’s handling and creates better aerodynamics.

Is the Chrysler Pacifica a good off-road vehicle?

To keep it short and sweet—no. At the very least, a car needs a ground clearance of 8.5 inches or more before you should even consider taking it off-roading. Unfortunately, none of the Chrysler Pacificas—past or present—pass the ground clearance test for off-road driving.
If you’re specifically looking for a car that can go off-road, you should also look for a powerful engine, an AWD drivetrain, and driver assistance features for multiple terrains. The Chrysler Pacifica is available with AWD, but those 5.4 inches aren’t going to cut it on the backroads. However, the Pacifica’s AWD is good for navigating slippery roads and driving in snow
To take your family to the trail, you’ll be much better off looking at a full-size SUV with a tall ground clearance like the
Toyota 4Runner
or the
Ford Expedition
.
