How to change your address on a Pennsylvania driver’s license

All who move to Pennsylvania will be required to update their address. But the process looks different for in-state movers versus those from out-of-state

If you’re moving within Pennsylvania

Staying local comes with a lot of perks. One big one: you can complete your change of address with the Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles entirely online
After you make your move, you have 15 days to submit your information—and you can do so in one of three ways:
Bureau of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 68287
Harrisburg, PA, 17106-8287
Whichever you chose, make sure you’re prepared with your current driver’s license and social security number.
Another perk? For you, the change is completely free. You won’t need to purchase a new license—you just need to change your address in the system. That said, if you would like a new license, you can order one for the price of $30.50.

If you’re moving to Pennsylvania from another state

Drop off your boxes and hop back in the car. To replace your out-of-state license, you’ll have to apply in person at your
local DMV
within 60 days of your move.
Before you go, make sure you assemble the following documents:
And be prepared to carve out a solid block of time to complete the process. Unfortunately, the PA DMV doesn’t make appointments.
In addition to time, your new PA license is going to cost you about $35.50. But beware: sometimes there are other fees. To best predict your payment, check out the
DMV’s service fee breakdown
.

Other steps for a Pennsylvania change of address

Alright, the license is taken care of. But unless you exclusively drive rentals, you’ll likely need to update your vehicle registration and title, as well.
If you’re moving within the state, the process is pretty easy. You can do so in one of three ways:
Bureau of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 68287
Harrisburg, PA, 17106-8287
In completing the process, you’ll automatically update your voter registration, too
Out-of-state movers have 20 days to
update vehicle registration
in person at the local DMV. While you can’t predict your wait time, you can make sure you’re prepared with everything you’ll need:
  • Your vehicle
  • Photo ID
  • Valid out-of-state title
  • Proof of Pennsylvania insurance (make sure it lists the policy’s dates)
  • VIN tracing or verification
  • Odometer reading
  • Payment (check or money order)
You’ll likely end up paying $37 for the update, but it can vary. Be prepared to pay a bit less or more come the time of your visit.

How to notify your insurance company of your Pennsylvania change of address

Notifying your insurance company of your move is super easy. And if you need to update your vehicle title and registration, you’ll have to complete this step first. Simply call your agent or go onto your provider’s portal or app to make the change.
You don’t want to sleep on this. Driving with the wrong insurance could lead to a
lapse in coverage
and get you into some trouble.

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Every zip code averages a different level of risk due to factors like weather, crime, congestion, and more. So when calculating your rate, insurers rely on your address. Drive under a false zip code and you could be committing
insurance fraud
.
The trouble doesn’t end there. You may also lack the minimum coverage required in your new state, which could lead to fines and suspensions
And we’re not done yet! If you get caught, your risk level increases and you could see a spike in your car, home, and renters insurance for years to come.
