background
If you’re a soon-to-be Sooner or you already live in
Oklahoma
but plan to move within the state, you’ll need to update your information with the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety (ODPS). There isn’t a convenient way to change your address with ODPS online or over the phone, but it still has to be done—and the “sooner,” the better.

How to change your address on an Oklahoma driver’s license

For Oklahoma residents who are moving somewhere within the state, changing your license address is pretty straightforward—but there’s no way to do it online. You can either make the change in person at an ODPS office or
local tag agency office
, or you can send a notification in writing.
If you’re new to Oklahoma, you’ll have to take the proper paperwork to an ODPS office, and then you’ll go to a tag agency office from there to get your new
Oklahoma driver's license
.

If you’re moving within Oklahoma

Oklahoma residents changing their address only have 10 days to update that information with the ODPS. There are three ways you can get it done:
  • Visit an Oklahoma Department of Public Safety
    office location
  • Visit an Oklahoma tag agency
    location
  • Send a letter that indicates your old address and your new address here:
Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, Driver License Services
PO Box 11415
Oklahoma City
, OK 73136-0415
These steps will change your address on record as required by law, but you will not get a new
Oklahoma driver’s license
reflecting your new address. If you’d like an updated copy of your driver’s license, you’ll have to take your old one with you to an ODPS office location. The fee for an updated license is $25

If you’re moving to Oklahoma from another state

New to Oklahoma? The steps to getting an updated license are a little more complicated than prior state residents. Oklahoma does not have a set timeframe in which you’re required to update your driver’s license, but you’ll want to do it quickly so you won’t have any trouble voting or finding employment.
To get started, you’ll want to gather all the identifying documents you’ll need, including:
  • A valid driver’s license or an expired license as long as it hasn’t been invalid for longer than six months
  • A birth certificate, valid passport, naturalization documents, or legal residency card for non-citizens
  • Your Social Security number
  • Proof of your legal name change, if the name on your license is to be different from the name on any of your other identifying documents
You can find a
complete list
of acceptable identifying documents from the ODPS.
When you have all your documents together, take them to an
ODPS Driver Exam Site
. You won’t need to take a driving test, but after the examiner has processed your documents, you will have to pass a vision test
If you pass the vision test, you will then take your documents to a
tag agency office
, where you’ll submit your paperwork and pay a fee to receive your new license. In Oklahoma, new state residents have to pay a $25 application fee and a $56.60 license fee

Other steps for an Oklahoma change of address

Aside from updating your driver’s license, when you move in or to Oklahoma, you’ll also want to update your motor vehicle registration. You can complete this process while you’re at the tag agency office getting your new license. If you’re from out-of-state, you’ll want to bring:
New Oklahomans will have to pay a title fee of $11, a $96 registration fee, and an excise tax
Oklahoma residents who move within the state can wait until their regular vehicle registration renewal to update the address. Oklahoma requires drivers to renew vehicle registration once a year.

How to notify your insurance company of your Oklahoma change of address

You’ve already got a lot going on if you’re in the process of moving, and it’s easy to let little details slip between the cracks. One detail you don’t want to miss is updating your insurance provider with your new address information. You should do this as promptly as you can after moving to avoid a potential lapse in coverage.
Many car insurance providers offer online portal access to customers so you can easily update your account information. If that’s not an option for you, or you want to talk through the changes to your account with a representative, just call their customer service number

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Most states require drivers to carry a minimum amount of
liability coverage
to legally operate a motor vehicle, and Oklahoma is no exception. However, if you change residences without notifying your car insurance company, you could unwittingly be driving without coverage. This puts everyone else on the road at risk, and it puts you at risk of being caught violating the law.
That’s because most car insurance providers set their premium rates in part based on your address. If you move, your rate might change to be better aligned with the particular risk factors in your new neighborhood. Failing to update your insurance company with an address change could render your policy null, meaning you could be driving without auto insurance
Besides the obvious risks of being in a
car accident without insurance
, a lapse in your policy could also subject you to steep fines or even jail time. A simple phone call notifying your insurance company of your move can save you from a ridiculous amount of hassle.
