How to change your address on a Minnesota driver’s license

Minnesota offers a wide range of living opportunities. You have
Minneapolis
and
Saint Paul
as your urban centers,
Bloomington
and St. Louis Park as your buzzing suburbs, and
Alexandria
and
Brainard
as your lakeside getaways.
As your life changes, so do your location preferences. So when the urge to move strikes, here’s how to change your address in Minnesota.

If you’re moving within Minnesota

If you're moving within Minnesota, you have 30 days to report a change of address to the DMV. But before you even think about setting foot in the DMV office, use the
pre-application feature
on their website to initiate the change of address process—this will save you time and headaches.
Then, you will want to schedule an appointment with Driver’s License Office or Driver and Vehicle Services Exam Station to obtain a duplicate license, which you will use while your change of address is being processed. Come prepared with identifying information, including:
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number
  • Previous and current residential addresses
  • Phone number
Keep in mind that there will be a $17 duplicate license fee and an $8 processing fee. But that’s it! You should receive your new license by mail in about four to six weeks.

If you’re moving to Minnesota from another state

Changing your address when you move to Minnesota from another state is a little more complicated—justifiably, you get 60 days to complete this process.
Start by using the DMV’s pre-application feature to get the ball rolling. Once again, this will help you spend less time at the DMV office.
Next, you will need to schedule a
Class D Knowledge Test
—and you must score 80% to pass. But don’t fret, there’s plenty of
online study material
to help you prepare!
After receiving your passing score, you must present
one primary and one secondary form of ID
at a
DMV licensing office
to progress your application. You can typically do this at the same location as your knowledge test. You will also need to turn in your driver’s license from your previous state of residence.
Lastly, you’ll need to pass a brief vision test, take your photo, and pay appropriate Class D fees (
see current fees
).
To ensure you can still legally drive, you’ll receive a temporary paper license while your brand new Minessota driver’s license is being processed. This usually takes about four to six weeks.

How to notify your insurance company of your Minnesota change of address

Be sure to update your insurance company on your new address to avoid a lapse in coverage. This is usually as simple as updating your profile within your provider’s mobile app or website. But if you run into any trouble, just give your agent a ring!

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Minnesota is one of 11 states that operate under a
no-fault
system. Therefore, it’s crucial to understand how this policy affects the bottom line of your state-required minimum insurance coverage. When you notify your car insurance provider of an address change, they can help ensure that your insurance policy is legally compliant.
