How to change your address on a Hawaii driver’s license
Thankfully, a Hawaii change of address within the state is as easy as can be. Depending on which county you move to, you may be able to complete a change of address through your local Motor Vehicle Licensing office in person or by mail, fax, or email.
If you’re moving within Hawaii
No matter if you’re moving from Honolulu to Kahului or just U-hauling down the block in Waipahu, you must update your address with your county’s Vehicle Registration & Licensing Division. There are four counties in Hawaii, and each one has a slightly different process:
City and County of Honolulu: You must send a letter or use the Change of Address
form, along with two forms of proof of your new address, within 30 days of your recent move in person or by mail or fax. The fee for a duplicate license is $6. County of Hawaiʻi: You must send a letter with your name, license number, date of birth, signature, current address, and new address, along with two forms of proof of your new address, to the Vehicle Registration & Licensing Division, Hilo Driver License, 349 Kapiolani Street, Hilo, HI 96720. The fee for a duplicate license is $6.
If you’re moving to Hawaii from another state
With out-of-state moves, the Hawaii change of address procedure can get a bit more complex. You must apply for a Hawaii driver’s license
in person and each county has a slightly different process. First, round up all the necessary documents, such as your Social Security card and proof of address that are usually required for license applications. At the very least, you should have documents that prove the following:
Your identity and date of birth
Your Social Security number
Your proof of Hawaii residency
Once again, there are four counties in Hawaii. The process for each county varies:
County of Maui: Bring proof of your Legal Presence, Principal Residence, and Social Security Number. Book an appointment online
to get your new license at the Kahului Service Center
. You can check for the appropriate documents and the required fees
online to bring with you as well.
In all Hawaii counties, you must surrender your out-of-state license before obtaining your new Hawaii driver’s license.
Other steps for a Hawaii change of address
After you change your address on your driver’s license, next you should immediately update your mailing address with the United States Postal Service (USPS). You can easily fill out a change of address form
online and also get the chance to update your voter registration and access over $750 in coupons. How to notify your insurance company of your Hawaii change of address
Make sure to let your insurance company know of your new address change to prevent a lapse in coverage.
Typically, you can just call your agent to inform them of changing your address on your insurance policy. Most insurance companies these days also have an app or online portal that allows you to update important matters, like an address change. Check your policy terms, but if you’re still confused, just call your agent.
Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important
After a big move, you don’t want to get pulled over for a minor traffic violation just to find out that you don’t have the proper insurance coverage. Hawaii requires all motorists to possess a minimum amount of liability insurance
, including personal injury protection
(PIP). If you forget to notify your insurance company and your policy ends up lapsing, you may be subjected to fines or possibly a license or registration suspension. Many insurance companies use your current address to set your specific rate by assessing the risk levels connected with certain ZIP codes. If you don’t let the insurance company know about your recent ZIP code change, this may be considered fraud.
To avoid a massive spike in your insurance, don’t forget to update your new address with your current insurance company!
