How to change your address on a Hawaii driver’s license
Thankfully, a Hawaii change of address within the state is as easy as can be. Depending on which county you move to, you may be able to complete a change of address through your local Motor Vehicle Licensing office in person or by mail, fax, or email.
If you’re moving within Hawaii
No matter if you’re moving from Honolulu to Kahului or just U-hauling down the block in Waipahu, you must update your address with your county’s Vehicle Registration & Licensing Division. There are four counties in Hawaii, and each one has a slightly different process:
- County of Maui: Residents are strongly encouraged to fill out aDriver’s License Change of Addressform and aMotor Vehicle Registration Change of Addressform within 30 days of your recent move in person or by mail or fax.
- City and County of Honolulu: You must send a letter or use theChange of Addressform, along with two forms of proof of your new address, within 30 days of your recent move in person or by mail or fax. The fee for a duplicate license is $6.
- County of Kauaʻi: Residents are strongly encouraged to fill out aDriver’s License Change of Addressform and aMotor Vehicle Registration Change of Addressform within 30 days of your recent move in person, by mail, or by fax.
- County of Hawaiʻi: You must send a letter with your name, license number, date of birth, signature, current address, and new address, along with two forms of proof of your new address, to the Vehicle Registration & Licensing Division, Hilo Driver License, 349 Kapiolani Street, Hilo, HI 96720. The fee for a duplicate license is $6.
If you’re moving to Hawaii from another state
With out-of-state moves, the Hawaii change of address procedure can get a bit more complex. You must apply for a
Hawaii driver’s license
in person and each county has a slightly different process. First, round up all the necessary documents, such as your Social Security card and proof of address that are usually required for license applications. At the very least, you should have documents that prove the following:
- Your identity and date of birth
- Your Social Security number
- Your proof of Hawaii residency
Once again, there are four counties in Hawaii. The process for each county varies:
- County of Maui: Bring proof of your Legal Presence, Principal Residence, and Social Security Number. Book anappointment onlineto get your new license at theKahului Service Center. You can check for the appropriate documents and therequired feesonline to bring with you as well.
- City and County of Honolulu: You must obtain aCity and County of Honolulu registrationonce your out-of-state license expires. For a new license with your updated address, you must report to aDriver’s Licensing Centerto complete your application, vision test, fingerprinting, payment of fees, and take a new photo for your license. - County of Kauaʻi: Bring proof of your Legal Presence, Principal Residence, and Social Security Number. Complete yourdriver’s license applicationand check theKaua’i County Fee Chartonline before heading to the Kaua’i DMV.
- County of Hawaiʻi: Complete yourdriver’s license applicationand bring proof of your Legal Presence, Principal Residence, and Social Security Number. Allacceptable documentscan be found online. You must also pass a vision screening.
In all Hawaii counties, you must surrender your out-of-state license before obtaining your new Hawaii driver’s license.
