background
In the state of Idaho, drivers are permitted to turn right on a red light so long as there is no sign prohibiting them from doing so. Of course, drivers must come to a complete stop and yield to any pedestrians or traffic before turning right on a red light.
To most drivers, seeing a red light means it’s time to stop—nothing else. However, in the U.S., you are allowed to turn right on a red light in most circumstances, so long as there is no sign stopping you from doing so.
When you come across an intersection with a sign barring you from turning right on red, obey the sign—

drivers can face fines and demerit points for a stoplight violation.

Can you turn right on red in Idaho?

According to Idaho Statute
49-802
, turning right on a red light is permitted, so long as these rules are followed:
  • A driver can visually make out all oncoming traffic
  • The driver yields the right of way to both oncoming traffic and any pedestrians
  • No signs (either municipal or state) are posted barring drivers from turning right on a red light
As a general rule, always watch for signs prohibiting you from turning right on red. Most drivers are used to being allowed to turn right on red, and can easily miss a “No right on red” sign if you are not paying attention.
If you come across a flashing red light in Idaho, make a complete stop, then check for pedestrians and/or oncoming traffic before proceeding with your right turn.
If you happen across a steady red arrow, this means you cannot enter the intersection to turn. The only reason you can enter the intersection is to make another movement that is explicitly allowed by another indicator (which will be green).

What about left turns on red?

In Idaho, drivers are allowed to make a left turn on red only when doing so from a one-way street onto another one-way street. Of course, be sure to yield to any pedestrians and traffic, and always follow the rules of the road.

Penalties for an illegal right turn on red in Idaho

In Idaho, you will face the following penalties if you are convicted of a stoplight violation:
  • $90 fine
  • 3 demerit points added to your driving record
You might not be too worried about a stop light violation, especially since it doesn’t bring a hefty fine in Idaho. However, fines and demerit points can cause your insurance premium to go up significantly. Insurers see such incidents as indications that you are a high-risk driver. This all being said, the best way to keep your premium low is to maintain a spotless driving record.
