What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Does size really matter? When it comes to ground clearance, it depends on what exactly you want to do with your SUV. Ground clearance is the measurement between the bottom of your car’s chassis and the ground. While this measurement might not mean much to everyday drivers, it becomes important if you plan on taking your SUV off-road.
Cars with a higher ground clearance will be able to tackle off-road terrain easier than cars with a lower ground clearance measurement. When a vehicle is higher off the ground, its undercarriage is less likely to be damaged by rocks and other off-road obstacles. As a rule, experts suggest that only SUVs with a ground clearance spec higher than 8.5 inches be used for off-roading purposes—which means you’re essentially out of luck when it comes to the BMW X2.

Is the BMW X2 a good off-road vehicle?

To put it simply—No. The BMW X2 offers a maximum ground clearance measurement of 7.2 inches, regardless of trim and model year, which is a good inch shorter than it should be for off-roading purposes.
There are attractive options with the X2, like added All-Wheel Drive on the xDrive28i trim and a more powerful 302-hp engine on the M35i trim, but at its core, the X2 is moreso a slightly elevated hatchback than it is a tried-and-true SUV. At the end of the day, the BMW X 2 is not recommended for off-roading.
