Jeep is a symbol of rugged, exhilarating adventures and drivers who value performance over practicality. However, fuel prices and environmental concerns have caused some Jeep owners (and would-be buyers) to reconsider their priorities.

Which Jeeps have the best gas mileage?

The Jeeps with the best gas mileage are two PHEV models and a subcompact SUV:
  • 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe (PHEV): up to 56 MPGe
  • 2022
    Jeep Wrangler
4xe (PHEV): up to 49 MPGe
  • 2022
    Jeep Renegade
: up to 27 mpg combined
While these are the most fuel-efficient, Jeep offers several other gas-sipping models. And if Jeep doesn’t do it for you, we’ve got options from competitors like
to help you make the most informed choice.

The most fuel-efficient Jeeps

The ‘22 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe offers the best fuel economy among Jeeps, hands down. A midsize crossover SUV, it still beats other notable PHEV Jeeps like the Wrangler 4xe.
The electrified Grand Cherokee marries an electric motor and an efficient four-cylinder 2.0L engine to get an EPA-estimated 56 MPGe. While this trails some other plug-in hybrid models, it’s really good for a Jeep.
Ultimately, this is an excellent ride that will turn heads and require far fewer trips to the gas station. On electricity alone, it can go 26 miles, meaning it can handle most work commutes and save you money every week.
With an MSRP of $59,865, it’s priced high for a Jeep but reasonable for the PHEV market. It comes down to what you want to spend up front on a Jeep to save money down the road.
Next is the 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which offers similar value and many of the same features as the Grand Cherokee 4xe. This Jeep starts at $54,595 and gets 49 MPGe or 20 combined mpggas-only.
If you’re not ready to jump on the EV bandwagon, then you can look at the 2022 Jeep Renegade, instead. With a $24,695 MSRP, this Renegade gets 23 city miles, 29 highway miles, and 26 combined miles. It’s equipped with a four-cylinder 1.3L engine with an automatic nine-speed transmission.
Jeep will never be the fuel economy GOAT. It’s simply not in the carmaker’s DNA.
Jeep values other traits—and its fans typically do, too. If you have different priorities than Jeep, check out the
2022 Honda Insight
. While not a plug-in, the Insight is an EV that beats the Grand Cherokee 4xe with 55 city mpg and 49 highway mpg.

Most fuel-efficient non-SUV Jeeps

Jeep has more than just rugged SUVs. Let’s look at some of its other vehicles to see how they fare in terms of gas mileage.
The 2022 Jeep Wrangler 4WD ($29,275 MSRP) is a small sport utility vehicle that gets 20 combined mpg, 17 city mpg, and 25 highway mpg. It's powered by a six-cylinder 3.6L engine and manual six-speed transmission.
The 2022
Jeep Gladiator
is a midsize truck that comes in several trims and configurations. The EcoDiesel 4WD gets 24 combined mpg, 22 city mpg, and 28 highway mpg.
There’s also the Rubic EcoDiesel 4WD with a 3.0L V6 engine that achieves 24 combined mpg, 21 city mpg, and 27 highway mpg.
If these numbers aren’t doing it for you, it might be time to turn your attention to Kia. The
Kia Niro
is a compact crossover available as a:
  • Hybrid
  • PHEV
  • All-electric SUV
The starting price of the Niro is $24,690 for hybrid models and $39,090 for battery-electric. Let’s review the fuel economy of each:
  • 2022 Kia Niro Hybrid: 51/46/49 mpg (city/highway/combined)
  • 2022 Kia Niro PHEV: 46 mpg (combined city/highway), 105 MPGe (combined city/highway)
  • 2022 Kia Niro Electric: 123/102/112 MPGe (city/highway/combined)
Kia doesn’t come with the same cache as a Jeep, of course. But if you can get past driving a non-Jeep, you could enjoy some spectacular fuel savings.

Most fuel-efficient non-hybrid Jeeps

The Renegadeleads the pack of non-hybrid Jeeps for fuel economy
Then there’s the 2022 Cherokee and its 26 combined mpg. It’s pricey at $37,785 but a strong option for people who like to use their Cherokee as an everyday ride.
Another fuel-efficient option is the 2022
, which gets 25 combined mpg, 22 city mpg, and 31 highway mpg. Owners get to enjoy the well-regarded 2.4L engine with four cylinders and automatic six-speed transmission.
Some notable competitors to Jeep are the
Ford Bronco
and the Chevrolet K5 Blazer. Both are less fuel efficient than the Renegade, Cherokee, and Compass, though. For instance, the Bronco gets a paltry 15 city mpg, 16 highway mpg, and 15 combined mpg.
You’ll have some solid options if you’re shopping for a non-hybrid Jeep. With the various trims and configurations, you can get the Wrangler, Renegade, or Cherokee you want (as long as you’re willing to pay for upgrades and add-ons).

A lot of Jeeps have a bad reputation for fuel economy. Since Jeeps are often modified for off-roading, this can make their fuel economy even worse. Certain types of Grand Cherokees and Wranglers can do a real number on your fuel budget.
The Toyota Prius Prime gets better gas mileage than any other vehicle right now. This is high praise, but if you’re looking for fuel economy first and foremost, then look no further than the Prius Prime. It’s great for the environment and your bank account.
