Which Jeep Wranglers have the best gas mileage?

One of the things that people love about the Jeep Wrangler is that it’s configurable in almost infinite ways. For the 2023 model year, there are 13 trim levels, six engine choices, and the option for a manual or automatic transmission on many of them.
But all of these things affect gas mileage, so here’s what we’re going to do: We’re going to rank the fuel economy by the engine type, as this is the factor that really makes the most difference.
So without further ado, here are the two best Wrangler engines as far as fuel economy goes: 
  • 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) engine: 49 MPGe combined
  • 3.0-liter V6 turbo EcoDiesel engine: 25 mpg combined
But that’s just scratching the surface. Let’s dig in a little further and look at the numbers for all six engines, as well as what trim levels each one is available on. Don’t worry, we’ve done all the math for you! 

The most fuel-efficient Jeep Wrangler engines

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that the best fuel economy you can get is with a PHEV engine. But unlike its internal-combustion-only counterparts, there’s only one choice here: a 2.0-liter, inline-four-cylinder turbo plug-in hybrid setup. 
This is what you’ll find under the hood in all four trim levels of the Wrangler 4xe, which is what Jeep is calling the PHEV version of the Wrangler. If you’re wondering, it’s also what you’ll find in the
Jeep Grand Cherokee
This engine will get you a combined MPGe of 49 miles, and a combined 20 mpg in gasoline-only driving. Range for all-electric driving is up to 21 miles, but that varies greatly depending on where you’re driving, how much you’re towing, etc. If you’re looking for a Jeep that will be a fierce contender at off-road and at the gas pump, this is the one. 
Starting MSRPs for the Jeep Wrangler 4xe range from $54,375 for the Willy 4xe to $63,015 for the High Altitude 4xe. And even though there’s just one engine, there are still a host of other ways that you can customize your Wrangler 4xe to suit your fancy. 
The second-place winner here might come as a bit of a surprise to some. The 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine has an EPA rating of 22/29/25 mpg in city/highway/combined driving and is the most fuel-efficient internal-combustion-only option for the Wrangler. 
Since diesel engines are primarily used in heavy-duty trucks and industrial machines, the average driver is likely not familiar with them. But diesel engines are more efficient than their gasoline counterparts, and diesel fuel contains 10% to 15% more energy than gasoline. A diesel engine also offers more power and low-end torque than a gasoline engine, which is why you’ll often see them as options on off-road vehicles. 
The diesel engines of past decades used to be loud and stinky, but today’s diesel engines are far more clean, more efficient, and quieter. Who knew? 
The rankings for the middle of the pack are less of a list and more of a cluster, and the best one varies depending on the specific parameter you choose to look at. Here’s how they stack up: 
  • 3.6-liter V6 engine: 20/18/25 mpg in city/highway/combined
  • 3.6-liter V6 eTorque mild hybrid engine: 21/20/24 mpg in city/highway/combined
  • 2.0-liter turbo inline-four engine: 22/24/23 mpg in city/highway/combined
If you’re looking at the combined mpg, then the 3.6-liter V6 engine has a slight edge. But if you do most of your driving on the highway, then the 2.0-liter I4 will give you the most bang for your buck. 
What’s a mild hybrid, you ask? Essentially, it’s an engine with a battery that provides more of a boost than a standard car battery, but less than a true hybrid. While a true hybrid vehicle can operate for a period of time on electricity only, a mild hybrid can’t. These are actually pretty common—you might even have one now and not know it! 
With any engine, there will be some variation depending on other factors such as the trim level, the transmission type, and whether your Wrangler has two doors, four doors, or no doors at all. But these variations won’t be huge—more like a mile to two in any given direction. 
So how do other trail warriors compare when it comes to fuel economy? The EPA hasn’t published 2023 results for the
Ford Bronco
yet, but the 2022 figures show that the Wrangler has a clear edge. The combined mpg ratings of the 2022 Bronco ranged from 15 to 20 mpg, which is hardly something to brag about. 
What about other SUV types that are PHEVs? The
Mitsubishi Outlander
is nowhere near as capable as the Wrangler, but it does have better fuel economy at 64 MPGe. If you’re looking for a PHEV that can compete with the Wrangler off-road, the new
Land Rover Range Rover
PHEV will get you around 42 MPGe, and the ability to drive in just about any terrain. 

The least fuel-efficient Jeep Wrangler engine

So if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll have noticed that we’ve covered five of the six engine options so far. The engine that comes dead last in the fuel economy race? That would be the monstrous 6.4-liter V8 HEMI, which is only available in the top-of-the-line Rubicon 392 trim. This beast will get you 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, but the fuel economy is a dismal 14 mpg in combined city/highway driving
 Not only will you pay at the pump, but the starting MSRP is nothing to take lightly. The Rubicon 392 starts out at $82,190 and is the most expensive Wrangler you can get.
