Audi’s stylish and refined Q5 SUV likely doesn’t strike you as the offroading type because…it isn’t. The Q5’s Premier and Premiere Plus trims offer 8.2 inches of ground clearance, while the top trim Prestige offers just 8 inches of ground clearance.
The Audi Q5 is a sleek, well-equipped, and roomy luxury SUV, ideal for the driver who wants the convenience of an SUV without sacrificing style. But a terrain-conquering behemoth? While all-wheel drive is standard, the Q5’s ground clearance isn’t ideal to satisfy an off-roader’s dream.
Curious about the Q5’s ground clearance? We've put together everything you need to know about how high the Q5 rises above the roadway.

2022 Audi Q5 ground clearance

The ground clearance of the Audi Q5 trim lines are as follows:
The Q5 is more of a touring SUV than one to tackle dusty, dirty, muddy, or unpaved roads with. With its smooth style both in-and-out, and exquisite craftsmanship to boot, this isn’t exactly the type of vehicle you want to get dirty in. If anything, the Q5 was built for you to look good in, not for being caked in mud, what with its new Black Optic Appearance package and sporty lines driving the style quotient into overdrive.

Audi Q5 ground clearance over the years

Off-roading isn’t exactly built into the history of the Audi Q5, either. Earlier generations of Q5s offer even lower ground clearance than the 2022 model, as shown:
  • 1st generation (2009-2012): 7.9 inches across all trims
  • 1st generation facelift (2014-2017): 7.9 inches across trims
  • 2nd generation (2018-2020): 8 to 8.2 inches
Experts recommend a ground clearance of at least 8.5 inches in order to confidently go off-roading. Considering no version of the Q5 sports more than 8.2 inches of clearance, you’d be best served to keep this beautiful machine on paved roads.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

What is ground clearance, and why should you care? Well, as a rule of thumb, it's a good idea to know how much space you have between the bottom of your chassis and the road underneath you.
The more ground clearance your vehicle has, the better it will be able to handle the rigors of offroading. As mentioned, 8.5 inches of ground clearance is considered to be the cut-off for whether a vehicle should safely attempt offroading. The Q5 falls a bit short of that, unfortunately.

Is the Audi Q5 a good off-road vehicle?

Well, the Audi Q5 is not an ideal road vehicle. It may tackle some light off-road adventures in a reasonably capable manner, but anything beyond that and you risk damaging your SUV’s undercarriage, even with Audi’s capable all-wheel drive system.
