Interstate 8 (I-8) runs between Casa Grande,
Arizona
and San Diego,
California
, covering 348.25 miles.
As one of the lowest highways in the country, Interstate 8 drops below sea level in the Imperial Valley and travels through many mountain passes as it connects San Diego, California to Casa Grande, Arizona. For its entire duration, I-8 only intersects with one other U.S. route—U.S. 95—but parallels the Old U.S. 80.
I-8 is part of the National Highway System and is considered an essential part of the nation’s economy, defense, and mobility. And the freeway from the eastern junction with California State Route 98 (SR 98) to the east end is part of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail tour route.

What is an interstate highway?

While you may have heard about highways and freeways, interstate highways are a series of roadways that connect states. They stretch over the mainland United States covering more than 47,000 miles, with some interstates running through multiple states.
Whereas most highways are named, interstates are designated by a number, with the lowest numbers found in the west and south. Interstates running north-south are given an odd number, while those running east-west are given an even number. And beltways and loops around cities are given a three-digit number.

What states does I-8 run through?

Although many interstates cross multiple states, I-8 is a continuous highway running through only two states. While the route for the interstate hasn’t changed and isn’t undergoing expansion, it has undergone construction for widening to accommodate an increase in travelers. Currently, I-8 runs through:
