How big is the gas tank on a 2020 GMC Terrain?

The exact size of your gas tank can vary depending on your model’s engine configuration. For 2020, GMC offered:
  • SL
    ,
    SLE
    , and
    SLT
    : 170-horsepower 1.5-liter engine
  • SLT and SLE: 137-horsepower 1.6-liter diesel engine
  • Denali
    : 252-horsepower 2.0-liter engine
All of these models have either a 14.9- or 15.6-gallon gas tank. The smaller 14.9-gallon gas tank is featured on all vehicles in the lineup except the all-wheel-drive Denali and regular gas models of the SLE and SLT. These are equipped with a 15.6-gallon fuel tank.

How to check your 2020 GMC Terrain’s gas tank size

We’ll walk you through a few other ways to find your GMC’s tank capacity so you know exactly how much fuel your vehicle needs.

Measure the gas tank

If you’re not afraid of getting your hands dirty and know your way around your GMC, grab a measuring tape and a calculator. Multiply the width, length, and height of the gas tank. Then, divide the result by 231 (that’s how many cubic inches are in a gallon).

Check your owner’s manual

Flip to the back of your owner’s manual and check the index for “fuel tank capacity” or “gas tank size” to get the precise size of your GMC’s fuel tank.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

Another simple way to find the tank size is to drive until your GMC Terrain’s fuel gauge hits “E” (just make sure you’re not too far from a gas station). Then, fill up the tank and note how many gallons you put in. While it won’t be exact, this will give you a good idea of how much your tank can hold.

How to save on fuel costs in a 2020 GMC Terrain

The 2020 GMC Terrain lineup gets a combined 23 to 27 mpg combined city/highway—but the mileage you’ll actually get depends a lot on your driving habits. And while 23-27 combined mpg is decent for an SUV, there are a few tricks that can save you even more money at the pump:
  • Follow your maintenance schedule. Don’t put off that oil change! Take your GMC in for regular tune-ups and get maintenance alerts checked out pronto. When your Terrain is running at its best, it will be more fuel-efficient.
  • Slow it down. The faster you accelerate and drive, the more gas your vehicle uses. To get better mileage, take it slow and steady.
  • Don’t idle, especially when it’s cold. Instead of idling your car in the driveway, drive it slowly so it warms up and you get some mileage out of the fuel you’re burning.
