background
The
Ford F-150
is known for its huge variety of trims, powertrains, drivetrains, cab sizes, and bed sizes, which make an astronomical collection of configurations for you to choose from. But when it comes to the 2020 model’s fuel tank size, you’ve got just three potential picks: 23, 26, or 36 gallons.
The owner’s manual for your particular truck should indicate the fuel tank size, but if you’re shopping or you just lost your manual, we can help you out, too.

How big is the gas tank on a 2020 Ford F-150?

The 2020 Ford F-150 fuel tank size depends on the cab size, box configuration, and engine that you pick for your pickup. The cab sizes are broken down into Regular Cab,
SuperCab
, and
SuperCrew®
Cab. The pickup bed comes with a 5.5-foot, 6.5-foot, or 8-foot box
The 2020 F-150 engine configurations are:
  • 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6
  • 325-horsepower 2.7-liter V6 Turbo
  • 395-horsepower 5-liter V8
And, each of these is available with either a 6-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission.
It’s a lot. But luckily, Ford has simplified the fuel-tank capacity question for us by offering two gas tank options—a standard range tank of 23 or 26 gallons, and an extended range tank of 36 gallons.
For the 2020 model, any truck with a Regular Cab or SuperCab comes with a 23-gallon fuel tank size for the standard range. The SuperCrew® Cab has a 26-gallon standard range tank
If you opt for the extended range tank, you’ll get a 36-gallon gas tank regardless of cab size, except this larger tank is not available for models with a 122-inch wheelbase. That means all the regular cab 6.5-foot box-length bed pickups won’t fit the bigger tank.
While you can pay to get the extended range 36-gallon tank on almost every 2020 Ford F-150 model, it does come standard on a few configurations:
  • The F-150 Raptor 4-door SuperCrew® 4WD
  • The Limited 4-door SuperCrew® 5.5-length box
  • The Limited 4-door SuperCrew® 4WD 5.5-length box
Every other SuperCrew® cab F-150 has a standard 26-gallon gas tank. And, excluding one exception, every SuperCab and Regular Cap 2020 F-150 has a 23-gallon standard tank. But, the Raptor SuperCab® comes standard with a 26-gallon tank.

How to check your 2020 Ford F-150’s gas tank size

Still not sure about your truck’s fuel tank capacity? You can find out yourself with these tips:

Measure the gas tank

Grab your measuring tape and get the width, length, and height of your gas tank. Make sure to get them in inches! Then, multiply these figures together, and divide the total by 231 (which is how many cubic inches are in a gallon). That will give your gas tank capacity.

Check your owner’s manual

Check your owner’s manual, or if you can’t find it, look at the PDF version on the
Ford website
.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you like to be a little on the wild side, try driving down to the “E” line on your pickup—but stay safe and don’t go beyond that. When you fill-up your tank, you’ll have an approximate measure of the tank’s capacity, with a little wiggle room.

How to save on fuel costs in a Ford F-150

The 2020 Ford F-150's gas mileage is not exactly efficient. The mpg you’ll see depends on which configuration you pick, as well as your Ford F-150 gas type. For instance, if you get E85 fuel in the 5-liter V8 pickup, you’ll only see a combined 14 mpg. On the other hand, using regular gas with the 3-liter V6 can net a combined 24 mpg.
If you’re worried about the gas usage hitting your pocketbook, you can save with these tips:
  • Stay on top of maintenance. Keeping up with your oil changes, tire rotations, and inflation, and routine maintenance services can help your car operate at maximum efficiency.
  • Drive cautiously. Let off the gas a little and coast to a stop instead of hitting the brakes to help conserve your fuel.
  • Don’t idle. This is an unnecessary waste of gasoline, so avoid it whenever you can!
