In 2018,
Buick
launched the Regal TourX, a midsize car that resembles a crossover but doesn’t quite fit the bill. For one thing, the Buick TourX’s ground clearance is just 5.8 inches across all trims in each model year.
The TourX has a lot more to offer than a low profile, though. This car is comfortable, quiet, and easy to drive. Plus, it has an extremely spacious cabin and ample cargo space—reminiscent of a family station wagon.
Although it was only around for three model years, the TourX made an impression with its exterior design cues. Read on to find out more about the ground clearance for every 2018 Buick TourX trim, presented by

2018 Buick Regal TourX Ground Clearance

The 2018 TourX has three trim levels: the TourX Essence, starting at $35,995; the TourX Preferred, starting at $33,595; and the TourX base, starting at $29,995. All three trim levels have 5.8 inches of ground clearance and an all-wheel-drive powertrain.
In fact, each model year of the Buick Regal TourX—2018, 2019, and 2020—offer the same three trim levels with the same ground clearance specifications and dimensions. The car just wasn’t around long enough to undergo any major redesigns
That's in part because competitors, like the
Subaru Outback
, offered more versatility with higher ground clearance and lower gas mileage.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Ground clearance is the measurement from the ground up to the lowest part of your car’s chassis. Basically, it informs the driver of the minimum amount of space needed between the ground and the car to avoid scraping or bumping.
While cars with low ground clearance have some strong advantages—they tend to be more stable and offer superior handling and aerodynamics—sitting so low to the ground wasn’t advantageous for the Buick Regal TourX, which has the body style of an SUV or crossover.
Cars with higher ground clearance are less stable due to their higher center of gravity. But, they can tackle more rugged terrain. They easily maneuver over potholes, wildlife, and rocky roads without scraping or damaging the car’s underside.
That wasn’t the case with the Buick Regal TourX. While drivers could appreciate the great handling and aerodynamic features, a big car meant for holding lots of cargo and passengers is going to get weighed down—shrinking that 5.8-inch clearance even more.

Is the 2018 Buick Regal TourX a good off-road vehicle?

You probably don’t want to take this car off road. It’s true that plenty of models have available aftermarket off-road kits, allowing you to lift the car and upgrade its suspension. But the Buick Regal TourX wasn’t long-lived or popular enough to have much aftermarket demand.
Assuming your TourX doesn’t have a lift kit of some sort, it’s best to keep it on the street. Having just 5.7 inches—in an unweighted car—between the ground and the chassis does not leave much room for anything you come across on the road, like debris, rocks, or animals.
