Whether you’re topping up your tank or doing a complete fill-up, you’ll probably want to know the capacity of your fuel tank to determine how much gas you need (and how much you’ll be spending).
While your F-150 owner manual should give you details on your model’s fuel tank, if you don’t have one or can’t find it,

How big is the gas tank on a 2005 Ford F-150?

As America’s best-selling pickup truck, the Ford F-150 does it right. Equipped with excellent capability and several strong powertrains, you’d also expect it to come with a larger-than-average gas tank to fuel all of your pick-up endeavors. The exact size of your gas tank will depend on your box and cab configuration and what’s under the hood of your F-150.
The 2005 Ford F-150 has three available engines, but the gas tank capacity varies based on the box length and cab configuration:
  • 4.2-liter V6
  • 4.6-liter V8
  • 5.4-liter V8
For the three engines, the fuel tank size ranges from 26 gallons to 30 gallons. The smallest tank is found only on the Regular Cab with either a 6.5-foot or 8-foot box, while you can find all three tanks on the Regular Cab,
SuperCab
, or
SuperCrew
models. However, most SuperCrew models come equipped with a 5.4-liter 30-gallon tank.
Newer models of the F-150 have the option of a 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel engine with a 26-gallon tank, while the hybrid 3.5-liter PowerBoost engine has a 30.6-gallon fuel tank—but unfortunately, you’ll have to opt for a new model to get these perks.

How to check your 2005 Ford F-150’s gas tank size

If you’re still unsure of the capacity of your F-150’s tank, don’t panic—there are a few quick and easy ways to figure out the volume, no stress needed.

Measure the gas tank

If you aren’t keen on scouring the internet or your vehicle manual for the gas tank capacity, you only need a pen and paper, measuring tape, and a calculator. Measure the width, length, and height of your engine and multiply them. Once you have a number, divide the result by 231 (that’s the number of cubic inches in a gallon)—now you have your gas tank capacity! See how simple that was?

Check your owner’s manual

You can also get your trusty old vehicle manual to look up your vehicle’s fuel tank size. Head to the index and look for “fuel tank capacity” or a similar phrase to determine how large your tank is.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If you don’t have an owner’s manual and aren’t able to measure your tank, there’s one other option you can try: get risky and run your F-150 dry. It might be walking on the wild wide, but driving until the fuel gauge hits “E” before filling it up is a simple way to determine your fuel tank size.
It won’t be an exact measurement, but it can give you a general indication of how many gallons your tank holds. That said, make sure you don’t drive too long on empty!

How to save on fuel costs in a Ford F-150

With a regular gasoline engine and four-wheel drive, the 2005 Ford F-150 gets a combined fuel economy of just 14 mpg city/highway, but these numbers may vary slightly depending on the engine size and trim level.
Pickup trucks are known gas-guzzlers, and the F-150 doesn't deviate from the norm. But just because you drive an F-150 doesn’t mean all your savings must go to fill your fuel tank. If you’re trying to moderate fuel consumption and save a few dollars, here are some fuel-saving tips to keep your wallet happy:
  • Stick to regular maintenance. Tire pressure, brake quality, transmission health, wheel alignment, and regular tire rotations affect your fuel economy. A better-maintained trick runs more efficiently.
  • Drive conservatively. Hard acceleration and speeding increase gas consumption, so take it easy on the gas pedal and accelerate slowly. If possible, throw on cruise control to stick to the speed limit.
  • Avoid idling, especially in the cold. Idling your car, by definition, is wasting gas. If you don’t have to idle, don’t. If it’s a chilly morning, drive your truck gently to warm it up instead of letting it run in the driveway.
  • Lighten the load. Less weight towing means less gas burned. If you’re trying to save fuel, empty your bed.
