How big is the gas tank on a 2003 Ford Ranger?

Ford’s beloved mid-size truck comes with a larger-than-average gas tank when compared to sedans, but it’s not the largest tank in the world of pick-up trucks.
For the following engines, the Ranger’s gas tank size varies:
  • 2.3-liter V4
  • 3.0-liter V6
  • 4.0-liter V6
For those three engines, the fuel tank capacity is 19.5 gallons. These engines are spread out across a number of trims including the lower tier Edge and higher tier XLT.

How to check your 2003 Ford Ranger’s gas tank size

If you still are unsure about your gas tank capacity for your Ranger, check out these simple ways to figure out the exact amount so you’re ready when fueling up.

Measure the gas tank

You can determine your fuel tank capacity all by yourself. You’ll just need a calculator and a measuring tape. To figure out the capacity of your tank, first multiply the width, length, and height of your tank then divide that figure by 231 (which is the number of cubic inches in a gallon).

Refer to your owner’s manual

You can also determine your gas tank size by reviewing your owner’s manual. Search for “gas tank” or “gas tank capacity” and it should list the exact amount your tank can hold.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

We don’t necessarily recommend this, but you can determine your Ranger’s fuel tank capacity by simply driving until the fuel gauge hits “E” prior to filling it up. Since most vehicles have a couple of gallons in the tank when your “E” light turns on, this way won’t give you the exact amount, however, it should be pretty accurate. Just don’t push your luck by driving too long while your tank is empty!

How to save on fuel costs in a Ford Ranger

With a regular gasoline engine and four-wheel drive, the 2003 Ford Ranger gets about 24 mpg combined city/highway, with minor variations for engine choice and trim.
Sure it’s not going to be the most fuel-efficient vehicle on the road, but there are still ways you can ensure you save a bit at the pump when filling up your Ranger. Check out these tips:
  • Stay on top of maintenance. Don’t let wear and tear on your Ranger build up because it can cause a decrease in your fuel economy.
  • Try not to idle, especially in cooler temperatures. Yes, idling is a good way to warm up your car, but it’s also a great way to waste a ton of fuel! You’re better off gently driving your Ranger to warm it up during the cold winter mornings instead of letting it run.
  • Drive carefully. Ease up on that gas pedal to avoid harsh accelerations to keep your fuel consumption steady and low.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
