How big is the gas tank on a 2002 Ford Ranger?

The 2002 Ford Ranger came in multiple trim levels, three engine choices, and had options for both cab size and wheelbase. There were a massive amount of combinations, but its gas tank size breaks down easily based on cab size and wheelbase.
According to the owner’s manual, here are the gas tank capacities for the 2002 Ranger:
  • Regular Cab with short wheelbase: 16.5 gallons
  • Regular Cab with long wheelbase: 20 gallons
  • Super Cab
    : 19.5 gallons
The Ranger was available in rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, and engine options ranged from a  2.3-liter inline four to a 4.0-liter V6. These factors don’t affect the size of the gas tank, but they do affect the rate of fuel consumption.

How to check your 2002 Ford Ranger’s gas tank size

If you’re still not sure how many gallons your Ranger’s tank can hold, never fear: there are a few other ways to determine just what a full tank of gas means in your truck.

Measure the gas tank

If you can access the gas tank, you can measure the tank for yourself and figure out the capacity. You’ll need a measuring tape and calculator. Measure and multiply the width, length, and height (the volume in cubic inches) of the tank, and then divide the result by 231 — the number of cubic inches in a gallon.

Check your owner’s manual

You can also check the size of your gas tank by looking it up in your owner’s manual. Look for “fuel tank capacity” or similar phrases to find the specifics.

Drive till empty, then fill it up

If measuring things and reading the instructions isn’t your vibe, you can opt to live dangerously and determine your gas tank capacity by driving until the fuel gauge hits “E” before filling it up. This won’t be an exact method, but it’ll give you a good idea as to what the capacity of the tank is. Just make sure you don’t press your luck on “E” for too long!

How to save on fuel costs in a Ford Ranger

Pickup trucks aren’t known for outstanding fuel economy. The mileage that you can expect from your Ranger will vary depending on your engine and drivetrain, but no matter what configuration you’ve got, it’s safe to say that you want to maximize your mileage.
Here are a few tips to make sure you get the best fuel economy possible in your Ranger:
  • Keep up with maintenance. Letting wear and tear accumulate on your truck will cause your fuel economy to suffer.
  • Drive carefully. Ease up on the gas pedal and avoid harsh acceleration to keep your fuel consumption steady (and low).
  • Avoid idling, especially in cold weather. Idling eats up gas like crazy. Drive your truck gently to warm it up on chilly mornings, and avoid idling for long periods of time whenever possible.
