If you are having trouble opening the trunk on your Lexus NX 200T, don’t run to the dealership just yet. Try a few troubleshooting tactics first.
Most common cause: you need to reset lock settings
The most commonly recorded trunk issue reported by Lexus NX owners has a simple fix. If your trunk doesn’t open when you press the key fob, and only opens once you unlock your driver’s side door, then you probably just need to adjust some settings.
Put your car into accessory mode (don’t turn it on) and go into “customization settings.” Select “door lock settings” and make sure it is set to all doors open when shifting into park.
This should allow all the doors, including the rear hatch, to unlock when in the park, and let you open it without first unlocking your front door.
Some other simple solutions to try out are to make sure your key is nearby when opening the hatch and to make sure the power back door option is turning on. The latter you can check by navigating through the settings on your instrument cluster.
Other possible causes
If the settings are all correct but your trunk still doesn’t open properly, there is a handful of other common causes such as:
- Broken struts: The Lexus NX 200t hatch uses struts with electric motors to power the liftgate. Problems with these struts are relatively common.
- Broken latch: If you can hear the actuator working (i.e. if it sounds like the trunk is trying to open but it’s not) then you will likely have to replace the latch.
- Electrical malfunction: A blown fuse, faulty actuator, broken sensor, or damaged wires could all cause your trunk to remain stuck closed.
- Broken key fob: The issue may lie in the key fob itself. Perhaps you need to replace the battery or perhaps you need a new fob.
- Something jammed in the lock: If there is an item jamming up the trunk lock, it might prevent it from unlocking.
How to manually open a Lexus NX 200T trunk
Obviously, if your Lexus NX 200T trunk won’t open, you can still access any precious cargo from the back seat. But what if you need to manually open the trunk, or want to try to check the latch?
Well, there is a lever inside the trunk that allows you to open the trunk in an emergency. You just can’t see it.
Accessing the emergency trunk release requires a bit of effort. You’ll need to access the trunk through the backseat, and you’ll need the valet key, flat screwdriver, or another prying tool.
Start by popping off the plaster cover at the bottom center of the trunk wall will your key or prying tool. This will reveal a small lever, which will allow you to manually open the trunk.
