What to do if your 2015 Audi A3 trunk won’t open

Before visiting your Audi dealership, it’s a good idea to try to find the source of the issue at home first. If you’re lucky, you may be able to fix the problem and skip dealership repair costs entirely!

Most common cause: valet mode accidentally activated

Your trunk might not open if you accidentally put your A3 into valet mode, which is a handy but subtle security system built into your Audi.
The 2015 Audi A3’s valet system is engineered to restrict access to certain functions of your car, including trunk access, when you hand over your keys to someone else. It’s perfect for valet parking, but it’s also a great function to turn on when lending your car to a friend or when hiring someone else to detail it.
Because of the system’s discreteness, it’s very easy to forget that it’s on, or to even turn it on without realizing it!
Thankfully, exiting valet mode in your Audi A3 is simple. There are two different ways to turn valet mode off:
  • Push the ignition button and press and release your brake pedal 10 times.Your module will blink twice to tell you that your car has exited valet mode.
  • Push the ignition button while pushing the unlock button and the trunk button at the same time.Your module will blink twice to tell you that your car has exited valet mode.
After completing one of these processes, try reopening your trunk. Ideally, it’ll open and you won’t need to take any further steps!

Other possible causes

Accidental valet mode activation is a common reason why your trunk isn’t opening, but it’s not the only reason. If your car’s valet mode won’t turn off, your problem could be a faulty latch or even an electrical issue. The following are other common causes of a malfunctioning trunk:
  • Faulty key fob: If your trunk only has issues opening when you try to open it with your key fob, the issue is likely your fob—not your trunk.
  • Broken door switch: On the other hand, if your fob can open the trunk but your driver’s door trunk switch doesn’t respond, the switch might need replacing.
  • Electrical issue: Your trunk may be stuck shut because of a blown fuse, failing actuator, or faulty wiring harness.
  • Malfunctioning latch:Can you hear the actuator working when trying to open your trunk to no avail? Chances are the trunk latch could be broken, preventing it from opening.
If any of the above problems seem likely, it’s best to bring your A3 to your local Audi dealership where an automotive specialist will diagnose and fix the problem. Expect them to pay close attention to the door locks, fuse box, electrical systems, and any other components that could be causing your trunk woes.

How to manually open a 2015 Audi A3 trunk

While the dealership should have a solution to your problem, you may not be able to get an appointment for a couple of days. What if you urgently need to access your trunk?
Thankfully, there is a way to open your trunk manually from inside your car.
First, you’ll need to put the back row of seats down to access your trunk. Then, in the center of your A3’s tailgate close to the trunk lock, you’ll see a plastic panel. Remove this panel to expose your trunk lock, as well as an emergency release lever. Pull this lever to open your trunk manually
Make sure you return the lever to its original position after you’ve opened the trunk. Otherwise, your trunk may not close again, and then you’ll be dealing with new trunk troubles!

Cost of trunk repair for a 2015 Audi A3

How much it costs to repair your A3’s trunk depends on what the cause of the problem is as well as where you live.
For example, a replacement lock latch will cost you around $175, plus an extra $75 to cover the labor of replacing it. A trunk actuator or trunk latch release replacement will cost you around the same amount for both parts and labor.
It’s possible that you won’t need to cover replacement parts at all. Sometimes, all you need is a
trunk latch adjustment
to get your trunk to open again. This minor service should cost you $100 or less and doesn’t require any part replacements.
Typically, A3 trunk repairs are pretty affordable—that is, unless your car has suffered actual damage to its body, preventing the trunk from opening. In that case, you’re looking at upwards of $1,000 for the part alone.Having a good Audi A3 insurance policy that includes
collision insurance
and
comprehensive coverage
can help reduce those high repair bills if your trunk damage was caused by a collision or an
act of God
