1. Jack up your vehicle
Drive your Volvo onto the car ramps and block the rear wheels, ensuring you apply the emergency brakes. Use jack stands under the lifting points to secure the car.
2. Remove the oil filler cap
Pull the hood release under the dash to open the hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine. To remove the cap, turn it counter-clockwise.
Remove the splash shield if your Volvo has one; it should be held in place by several bolts.
3. Drain the old oil
Locate the 13mm oil drain plug and position the drain pan beneath it. Remove the oil drain cap by turning it counter-clockwise and allow the old oil to drain—this could take up to 15 minutes.
4. Replace the oil filter and reinstall the drag plug
Remove the oil filter (a softball-sized cylindrical component attached to the engine) with oil filter pliers.
Apply a tiny amount of oil to the oil filter gasket ring before installing a new filter.
Replace the copper ring on the oil drain plug and reattach the oil drain plug once all of the oil has been drained.
5. Refill the oil
Pour the required amount of oil into the oil filter hole. Use a funnel to minimize splashing and take care not to overfill the engine.
Replace the oil filter cap and double-check the engine bay for any tools that may have been left inside.
6. Check the oil level
Allow several minutes to pass before using a dipstick to check the oil level.
Start the engine and wait five seconds to see if the oil pressure light goes off. Turn off the engine and wait at least five minutes before checking the oil level again—if it’s low, add some.
Keep your eyes peeled for any oil leaks for a few days after your oil change.
