A Volvo XC90 should undergo an oil change every 7,500 to 10,000 miles using 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, or 5W-40 full synthetic oil. Double-check your owner’s manual to ensure you’re using the correct amount and type of oil.
Fresh engine oil is key to your car’s performance. It can improve fuel efficiency and preserve the engine, but if not changed out on a regular basis, it can become viscous or dirty, leading to problems like corrosion and engine knock.
While an oil change is a fairly simple procedure, the specifics vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle. The insurance shopping and comparison app Jerry is going through everything you need to know about getting an oil change for your Volvo XC90 down below.

How often does a Volvo XC90 need an oil change?

Your Volvo XC90’s engine oil should be changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
Consult your owner’s handbook and your dealer to determine the best intervals for your Volvo, as your needs may vary depending on the climate where you live and how much you drive.

What kind of oil does a Volvo XC90 need?

The Volvo XC90 has different recommended oil types depending on the mileage of your vehicle.
For new Volvo XC90 cars with less than 75,000 miles, you can use 0W-20, 0W-30, or 5W-30 full synthetic oil.
For new Volvo XC90 cars with more than 75,000 but less than 100,000 miles, you should use 5W-40 full synthetic oil.
It’s critical that you use the right grade of oil for your Volvo XC90. Using a different grade of oil could damage your engine and void your warranty

How much does an oil change cost for a Volvo XC90?

The cost of an oil change will vary depending on whether you take your Volvo XC90 to a professional or do it yourself.

For model years 2003 to 2022, a Volvo XC90 oil change should cost between $144 and $178 on average.
Labor costs are expected to be between $55 and $69, with parts costing between $89 and $109.
This range does not include taxes or fees, nor does not take into account your exact model year or area. If your car needs parts replaced, expect your bills to increase further.

DIY cost

You'll likely save money if you change your own oil—provided that you have the right equipment. A quart of oil can cost from $4 to $12, while five quarts can cost from $10 to $40.

How to change the oil in a Volvo XC90 yourself

What you’ll need

  • The recommended engine oil (0W-20, 0W-30, or 5W-40)
    • For 2.5T, 2.4 T5, 2.4i engines—5.8L
    • For 2.8 T6, 2.9 T6, 2.9, 3.2, 4.4 engines—6.6L
  • Oil drain pan
  • Oil filter
  • Oil filter pliers
  • Oil funnel
  • Ratchet
  • Ramps
  • Jack stands

1. Jack up your vehicle

Drive your Volvo onto the car ramps and block the rear wheels, ensuring you apply the emergency brakes. Use jack stands under the lifting points to secure the car.

2. Remove the oil filler cap

Pull the hood release under the dash to open the hood and locate the oil filler cap on top of the engine. To remove the cap, turn it counter-clockwise.
Remove the splash shield if your Volvo has one; it should be held in place by several bolts.

3. Drain the old oil

Locate the 13mm oil drain plug and position the drain pan beneath it. Remove the oil drain cap by turning it counter-clockwise and allow the old oil to drain—this could take up to 15 minutes.

4. Replace the oil filter and reinstall the drag plug

Remove the oil filter (a softball-sized cylindrical component attached to the engine) with oil filter pliers.
Apply a tiny amount of oil to the oil filter gasket ring before installing a new filter.
Replace the copper ring on the oil drain plug and reattach the oil drain plug once all of the oil has been drained.

5. Refill the oil

Pour the required amount of oil into the oil filter hole. Use a funnel to minimize splashing and take care not to overfill the engine.
Replace the oil filter cap and double-check the engine bay for any tools that may have been left inside.

6. Check the oil level

Allow several minutes to pass before using a dipstick to check the oil level.
Start the engine and wait five seconds to see if the oil pressure light goes off. Turn off the engine and wait at least five minutes before checking the oil level again—if it’s low, add some.
Keep your eyes peeled for any oil leaks for a few days after your oil change.

What happens if you don’t change the oil on a Volvo XC90?

By lubricating the engine parts, the oil in your car minimizes corrosion and engine knock, distributes heat, and increases fuel efficiency. If you don't change the oil in your XC90 regularly, you risk running into the problems listed below:
  • Engine deterioration
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Overheating
  • Total engine failure
Regular oil changes may be inconvenient, but they are definitely less expensive than the major repairs that will be required if you neglect to change your oil.
