How often does a Volvo S60 need an oil change?

If your S60 uses conventional oil, you need an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles. If you have a newer model that uses synthetic oil, you can go between 7,500 and 10,000 miles for each oil change.
With a luxury vehicle like the S60, you may want to take your car right to a Volvo dealership to get the best service. Otherwise, find a qualified mechanic that works with Volvos or opt to do the job yourself, if you have the right equipment and experience.

What kind of oil does a Volvo S60 need?

Depending on your S60’s engine, you’ll need either ACEA A5/B5-grade SAE 0W-30 or VCC RBS0-2AE 0W-20 (for model year 2020 and newer). 5W-30, 5W-40, or 10W-30 may also work.
Using the right oil is the key to keeping your fuel efficiency and performance high. If you accidentally put the wrong oil into your car, you could have your manufacturer’s warranty voided

How much does an oil change cost for a Volvo S60?

The main determinant of your oil change cost is whether you take the car to a professional or do it yourself. Luxury cars like Volvos often benefit from going directly to a dealership or a mechanic that regularly works on high-end vehicles.

Professional cost

The average cost of an oil change for an s60 with a professional is $140-168. Taxes, fees, or additional repair costs are not included in this estimate.

DIY cost

If you already have the appropriate equipment, you’ll just need to account for the cost of the oil, which may be around:
  • $4-13 per quart
  • $10-40 per five quarts

How to change the oil in a Volvo S60 yourself

What you’ll need

  • 5.7 quarts of appropriate oil
  • Volvo S60 oil filter, such as an appropriate Mann oil filter
  • 17mm wrench or socket and ratchet
  • Oil drain pan with at least 6 quarts’ capacity
  • Funnel
  • Drive-on ramps or a jack with jack stands
  • Clean rag

1. Warm up the engine

Turn on your engine and let it run for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature.
Use a dipstick to confirm the current oil level and verify there are no other issues. Then turn it off.

2. Secure the car

Raise the front of the car by putting it on the ramp or using a jack and jack stands. Consider using wheel locks for an extra safety precaution.

3. Drain the old oil

Next, you’ll need to drain the old oil. Open the hood of the car, then locate the oil drain plug under the vehicle. You’ll need to remove the splash pan with its seven bolts before unscrewing the plug.
Use the 17mm wrench to unscrew the plug, set up the drain pan, and let the old oil flow out.

4. Remove the filter

The driver’s-side engine bay will house the oil filter. Utilize the oil filter wrench if you can’t unscrew it with your hand.
Keep the drain pan in place in case more oil comes out at this point.

5. Install the new oil filter

Clean the oil plug and filter area with a rag before installing a new filter.
Lubricate the new filter’s O ring using oil and place it inside. Make sure to tighten the filter gaskets to the owner’s manual specifications.

6. Put new oil in the engine

Now, it’s time to pour in the oil using a funnel to prevent spillage. A complete tank will be 5.7 quarts.
Then, turn on the engine to get the new oil circulating.

7. Stop the engine and check the oil level

After around three minutes, turn off the engine and check the oil level using a dipstick. Top it off if necessary.

8. Reset the oil change reminder

If everything looks good, you’re just about done. The final step is to reset your oil change reminder (if you have a newer display system on your dashboard). Here’s how to do it:
  • Put your key in the ignition and turn it slightly or quickly press the start/stop button (you want to turn the ignition without turning on the engine)
  • This puts you in accessory mode. From here, press the minus sign (-) on the left side of the steering wheel and hold
  • Once you’re holding the button, press the brake pedal and press and hold the start button. Wait for an i symbol to appear on the dashboard
  • When the i appears, let go of everything and the system will reset

What happens if you don’t change the oil on a Volvo S60?

When your oil gets old, it becomes dirty and viscous (meaning it doesn’t flow as easily). Neglecting to change your oil on time can cause serious engine problems including corrosion, engine knock, decreased fuel efficiency, and even total engine failure.
Regular oil changes may seem like an annoying commitment to some, but think about it this way: it’s better to spend a little time and money on a
basic car maintenance schedule
now than face a long time in the shop and massive
car repair
bills later.
