Before you can enable Apple CarPlay in your Volvo, you need to make sure that your Bluetooth is turned off—you cannot activate Apple CarPlay in your Volvo XC90 with Bluetooth enabled. Following that, connect your iPhone to your XC90 via USB. If you have two USB ports available, use the one with a white border.
