The Toyota Highlander spare tire is locked to the underbelly of the frame towards the rear of the vehicle. Here’s how to get it out:
  • Pull over to a quiet, level area as far from oncoming traffic as possible.
  • Remove the side panel from your trunk.
  • Use your key to unlock the spare.
  • Use a wrench to unbolt the tire from the metal rod holding it to the frame.

How to use the spare tire on a Toyota Highlander

First things first, you need to pull your Toyota Highlander over somewhere safe. Someplace like a parking lot would be ideal.
Once you’re far from other cars, it’s time to put your car in park and secure it by placing heavy objects in front of all four wheels. Then follow these steps to use your Toyota Highlander spare:
  1. Open the floor of your trunk by pulling the fabric tab by your trunk hook.
  2. You should see a few slots with tools for removing the tire. Note that your vehicle also has
    jack stands
, which can be found behind the Highlander’s tonneau cover.
  3. Take the bent wire with a hook at the end and loop the hook through the silver ring to your right.
  4. Anchor the top of the wire and turn it counterclockwise to lower the tire.
  5. Keep turning the wire even after the tire hits the floor—you’ll need extra slack to detach the tire from the wire.
  6. Pull the tire out from under your car with the wire. You should see a platform under the tire and a large bolt with a wire in the center of it.
  7. Push the bolt through the hole in the tire to release it.
  8. Once you’ve
    installed the spare tire
, you can put the old one on the platform, loop the bolt through its center, and turn the wire clockwise to attach it to the bottom of your car.
When in doubt: Consult your owner’s manual for information that’s specific to your model trim and year of Highlander.
