The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is the latest in the 5th generation of the model, which was first introduced in 2010. Like the rest of the 5th generation 4Runners, the 2022 has an engine oil capacity of 6.6 quarts.
In order to keep your 4Runner operating at peak performance and extend its life, you’ll have to keep up with its
basic maintenance schedule
. One of the most important steps of that regular maintenance is, of course, an oil change.
Changing your oil at home can save you money, but you’ll want to do it right in order to avoid costly mistakes. Let’s take a look at the engine oil capacity of the Toyota 4Runner, the kind of oil you should use, and how often this should be done.

Toyota 4Runner engine oil capacity

When you’re getting ready to
change the oil
in your car, you’ll need to know that car’s engine oil capacity in order to know how much you should buy. The Toyota 4Runner has an engine oil capacity of 6.6 quarts.
An oil capacity of 6.6 quarts—or 6.25 liters if metric is more your style—is on the higher end for an SUV, but not by much. You’ll likely find oil for sale at your local department or auto parts store in jugs that contain either one or five quarts, so you may need to buy a few to have the total amount needed for your oil change.
Keep in mind that engine oil capacity is different from the engine displacement of your 4Runner. The engine that powers this SUV is a 4.0-liter V6, and that 4.0 liters refers to the amount of space the engine takes up (in other words, displacement). The engine oil capacity—in this case 6.25 liters—refers to the amount of oil that you need for an oil change.

What kind of oil does a 2022 Toyota 4Runner need?

When buying the engine oil for your 4Runner, you’ll also need to make sure you buy the correct type of oil.
Engine oil is coded very specifically, but all you really need to know is that, according to
Toyota
, you should be using Genuine Toyota 0W-20 motor oil whenever possible. If you want to know exactly what that means, here’s a quick overview:
  • The numbers in the label refer to the oil’s viscosity or thickness
  • The first number represents the oil’s thickness at a temperature of 0°F (The “W” next to it stands for “Winter”, which really drives this point home)
  • The second number represents the oil's thickness at hotter temperatures—specifically 212°F
Using Genuine Toyota 0W-20 oil ensures that your oil will have a relatively low viscosity at both low and high temperatures, and keep your oil lubricated and functioning in a way that will extend its life.
Genuine Toyota oil is also fully synthetic, which means it is free of some sediments and debris that are found in conventional oil. That sediment can build up on your engine, and the benefit of synthetic oil is that without that risk, you don’t have to change your oil as often.
If you can’t find Genuine Toyota 0W-20 oil, Toyota recommends 5W-20 mineral oil as the next best thing.

How often to change oil on a 2022 Toyota 4Runner

The frequency with which you change your oil depends on the kind of oil you are using. For the 0W-20 full synthetic that Toyota recommends in the 4Runner, you’ll want to change your oil every 10,000 miles or 12 months.
If you do have to use 5W-20 mineral engine oil, though, that interval changes. In that case, you’ll need to change your oil at the six-month or 5,000-mile mark. When you are changing that 5W-20 oil out, try to replace it with the 0W-20 synthetic oil.
Not sure when your 4Runner last had an oil change? Look for these clues that it might be time to swap yours out:
  • Dark brown or black motor oil
  • Oil that has a coarse or gritty texture
  • Knocking or other strange noises coming from engine
  • Odors like smoke or burning
  • Check oil engine light coming on

How to change your oil and oil filter

When it is time to change your oil, you’ll first need to gather up your materials. The most important is 6.6 quarts of your 0W-20 full synthetic oil, but you’ll also need:
  • Replacement filter
  • 10, 12, and 14 mm sockets
  • Socket wrench
  • Filter wrench (64 mm)
  • Drain pan
First, park your SUV on a level surface and let it run for five to 10 minutes to let it reach running temperature. Before you get under the car, turn it off and pop the hood. Then:
  • Locate the oil drain cap (you may need to first remove your skid plate cover with a socket and ratchet to get to this)
  • Place the drain pan under the drain cap
  • Use your 14 mm socket to remove the cap, and let the oil drain
  • Once it is emptied, reinstall the oil drain cap and the skid plate cover
If it’s time to replace your oil filter, follow these steps at this point. If it isn’t skip ahead to the next section:
  • Remove the front skid plate and skid plate cover to access the oil filter
  • Use a ratchet to remove the metal plug
  • Use the filter wrench to remove the filter housing and then remove the old filter from the housing
  • Coat the o-ring that came with your new filter in new engine oil, and pop it on the housing
  • Put the new filter into the housing and reinstall it
  • Reinstall the metal plug, the skid plate, and the skid plate cover
Once you have changed the filter, you can follow these steps after draining the oil:
  • Remove the oil fill cap from your engine
  • Pour in the 6.6 quarts of new oil
  • Make sure the oil fill cap is securely replaced, and the drain plug is back in place
Be sure to check for leaks by turning on the car and letting it run for a few minutes. You also may want to use your dipstick to make sure your oil level is correct.
When it comes to that old oil, you can place it in an airtight container and bring it to a recycling center. Never dump it out into the trash or on the ground, as it can be very harmful to the environment.
And that’s it! Do this as often as the manufacturer recommends, and your Toyota 4Runner will thank you with improved and more consistent performance.
