background
The battery size on a
Tesla Model Y
electric SUV ranges from 75 kWh to 81 kWh, depending on its model year and trim level.
  • The 2022 Tesla Model Y powertrain packs the most powerful battery at 81 kWh, but the 2023 Model Y manages to match performance with a smaller 75 kWh battery pack.
  • The maximum driving range for new Tesla Model Ys is 330 miles
  • The top speed for a 2023 Model Y Performance is 155 mph

Tesla Model Y battery size

The 2022 Tesla Model Y: This model packs the highest high-voltage lithium-ion battery capacity at 81kWh, thanks in part to battery cell and structural battery pack technology upgrades.
Older and 2023 Tesla Model Y: Other model years for this electric car typically feature a 75 kWh battery.
In the rear-wheel drive (RWD) base model, the Model Y battery gets about 279 miles of range. When paired with the dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrain in Long Range and Performance models, both the 81kWh and 75 kWh batteries offer the following specs:
  • 2022-2023 Tesla Model Y Long Range:
    Maximum estimated range
    of 330 miles
  • 2022-2023 Tesla Model Y Performance: Top speed of 155 mph
Every new Model Y battery is also protected by
Tesla’s Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty
. Both the Model Y Long Range and Performance are covered for eight years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Model Y battery vs. the competition

In addition to an impressive battery, the Tesla Model Y offers the following customer appeal:
It seems like the Tesla Y has a leg up on the competition in the design department, but let’s take a closer look at how this Musk-approved crossover fares against other electric vehicles in terms of battery performance:

Keep in mind: As more electric trucks like the
Ford F-150 Lightning
start to roll out, their battery size and power are likely to blow the Model Y out of the water. However, an electric truck’s battery is designed for strength. Tesla still reigns supreme when it comes to standard range.
