background
Your Smart Car’s paint code can be found on the engine firewall, the driver’s side door jamb, or on the lid of the trunk. This code can be used to order the matching paint color for your vehicle so you can repair minor nicks and scratches at home.
We’ve all walked back to the parking lot only to find a new scratch on a beloved car. The good news is that you can quickly touch up any minor dings yourself with nothing more than a paint can, brush, sandpaper, and patience.
That’s where paint codes come in. Made up of a mix of two to three letters and numbers, paint codes are important for identifying your car’s exact paint color so you don’t end up with a multi-colored paint job. From locating your Smart paint codes to ordering paint,

Where can I find my Smart Car’s paint code?

No matter your Smart model, your paint code will be on the manufacturer’s sticker. There are a few places to locate the manufacturer’s sticker:
  • The engine firewall (beneath the hood)
  • The door jamb of the driver’s side door
  • The lid of the trunk
Once you’ve found the manufacturer’s sticker, you’re looking for a code with a mix of numbers and letters. Paint codes can vary in length and composition depending on your Smart model and year.
Sometimes, the sticker will have two codes listed—one will be a mix of numbers and letters and the second just letters. Both codes work when searching for your paint color online.
If you’ve checked all these spots and still can’t find your manufacturer’s sticker and paint code, no worries—you can search for your car’s paint color with your vehicle identification number (VIN). The VIN will be listed on your vehicle’s
certificate of title
,
insurance documents
, or inside the vehicle.
This sticker will be in a different place depending on your car’s make and model:
  • 450: look for a sticker that is in front of the engine cover or behind the right-hand side of the engine cover under the carpet
  • 450 Fortwo (1999-2000): the VIN will be printed on the edge of the engine’s battery box
  • Fortwo 451: the VIN sticker will be in the small window on the lower right-hand side of the windshield, and also on a sticker in the door jamb
  • Roadster 452: look for a sticker at the back, right-hand side of the engine bay aperture, and in the door jamb
  • 453 Fortwo: the VIN stamped into the frame underneath the carpet flap of the right side passenger seat
  • 453 Forfour: the VIN stamped into the frame underneath the carpet flap of the right side passenger seat

Where can I get paint for my Smart Car?

After you’ve figured out your car's paint code, you’re ready to shop! Paint can be purchased online from
Automotive Touchup
or
TouchUpDirect
Small touch-ups can easily be done with a paint pen. These are often a reliable and more affordable option when touching up small knicks and scratches on your car  (you won’t have to waste money on a whole gallon!).

Paint touch-up tips

It’s time to get painting once you’ve gathered your supplies! Before getting started, there are some simple tricks to make your at-home paint job look professionally done:
  • Start by using soap and water to clean the damaged area
  • Use fine sandpaper or a wire brush to gently buff away any rust that has developed on the scratched area
  • Apply a primer to bare metals or plastics that need a touchup—the primer will need to dry overnight. The next day, use fine sandpaper to gently sand it down, creating a smooth and even surface
  • Paint the damaged area by applying several coats—allow a minimum of 20 minutes for the paint to dry between coats
  • After applying the final coat of paint, let it dry overnight
  • Brush a
    clear protective coat
over the painted area after the paint has been allowed to thoroughly dry—like with the paint, it is best to apply several layers with drying time in between
  • Let the clear protective coat dry for three days—once fully dried, use a rubbing compound to buff the area until it shines
