What is the throttle body?

The throttle body is an air metering device that keeps air flowing within your engine.
The throttle body uses a butterfly valve to let in the correct amount of air between the air intake and engine manifold. This prepares the mixture of fuel and air that your engine will combust to produce energy.

When do I need to replace my throttle body?

Here are a few signs that it your throttle body may be in disrepair:
  • The check engine light is on
  • Your idle speed is too high or too low
  • The transmission is shifting poorly
While it is technically safe to drive with a dysfunctional throttle body, you probably won’t get much use out of your vehicle. The car will likely have limited power and noticeably lack in engine performance.
That said, it’s best to take the car in to a mechanic as soon as you realize there is a problem. Driving too long on a busted throttle body can lead to a breakdown.

How to replace a throttle body

First, the mechanic will remove the defective throttle body by:
  • Disconnecting the rubber hose connecting the throttle body to the air filter
  • Removing any electrical connections.
  • Undoing the bolts that attach the throttle body to the plenum and gasket
Then, they’ll attach a new throttle body. They must reattach the bolts, put in all electrical connections, and reattach the rubber hose.
The mechanic will finish by running your engine to make sure everything is working correctly.
