What is a camshaft position sensor?
As its name suggests, the camshaft position sensor keeps track of the camshaft’s position and sends this information to the car’s computer system. The computer uses the data sent from the camshaft position sensor to fire the fuel injectors at the correct times.
Without a properly working sensor, your engine may misfire or the injectors might not fire at all. Plus, fuel economy can be negatively affected.
When do I need to replace my camshaft position sensor?
Here are a few signs it’s time to replace your camshaft position sensor:
- The car is not starting
- The car’s acceleration is sluggish
- The car misfires
- The “Check Engine” light is on
Both heat within the engine and oil leaks can damage the sensor, leading to the need for replacement.
If you have an OBD-II diagnostic scanner, the engine code P0340 indicates a Camshaft Position Sensor “A” Circuit Malfunction. However, this code can also be tripped by issues with the crankshaft position sensor, the mass airflow sensors, or the timing belts.
How to replace a camshaft position sensor
Take your vehicle to a mechanic to get your camshaft position sensor replaced.
After locating the sensor, the mechanic will disconnect the negative battery cable attached to the sensor. Then, they’ll remove the sensor’s electrical connector and its mounting screws. With everything disconnected, they’ll be able to remove the malfunctioning sensor.
They will then install a new sensor and reconnect everything.
After the sensor is replaced, the car will be test-driven to make sure everything is working correctly.
